Bernie Sanders picks up megaphone, walks union picket in Cedar Rapids

Source: Des Moines Register

Jason Noble

CEDAR RAPIDS, Ia. – Bernie Sanders grabbed a sign and then a megaphone as he walked a labor picket line Friday night.

Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont and candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, joined perhaps 100 Cedar Rapids-area union workers in an “informational picket” outside Penford Products, a corn processor where the Bakers Confectioners Tobacco Grain Millers union local 100G is negotiating a new contract with the management.

Sanders strolled up to the picket shortly before 5:30 p.m., picked up a sign stapled to a long stick and marched with the crowd to a park across the street from the plant.

“I want you to know being out on a picket line and standing with workers is something I have been doing for my entire life,” Sanders told the crowd. “I did when I was mayor of the city of Burlington, did in Congress, did it in the Senate. This is what I do.”

I love Bernie for being the last of a dying breed: a NEW DEAL DEMOCRAT and will work my ass off for him.

However, I truly fear that corporate interests will take ANY and EVERY means necessary to prevent him for becoming president. If you look at the history of this country, the 1960's in particular, there are money interest in America that will act to stop Bernie and the people from a return to the way democracy used to be in the USA. It's troubling.

Are you saying that the military industrial complex didn't do everything that it could to keep the Vietnam War going? I'd say that was a pretty big money interest.

One of the things Bernie would like to do is get Citizens United overturned. This is one of the main ways our democracy has been taken away from us. Do you really think the Koch Brothers, for example, would just say, "OK, we give up"? I think not.

The ARE part of the Washington establishment and have supported things that have ruined this nation. I would support Hillary over ANY Republican in November 2016. However, you can't say that Hillary is as progressive as Bernie Sanders. Bill Clinton did a lot of damage this this nation:

A. Deregulated the Telecommunications Industry. The result was Rush "Blowhard" and Gobbelsvision aka Fox News.
B. NAFTA. The result was the loss of thousands of manufacturing jobs.
C. Repeal of Glass/Steigel with Graham/Leach. The result was an economic meltdown that Barack Obama is still cleaning up.
D. Hillary voted for the Iraq War and the Patriot Act.

Please explain to me exactly how a former self proclaimed "Goldwater Girl" and wife of "Conserva-Dem" Bill will be a strong progressive.

In Central and South America United fruit growers were busy in the 60s. Here the gov put on the Vortex rock festival to keep people from attending the convention. The 60s was very dangerous to the status quo as people began to think outside of the box and realized "war sucks." I had a bumper sticker saying that and was almost suspended from high school. Thanks to the ACLU I was not.

36. EXECUTIVES ACTION
Sat Sep 5, 2015, 01:09 PM
Sep 2015

There's a film out there called EXECUTIVE ACTION made in the late 1960's about the JFK assassination. It fed into conspiracy theories. It shows how the powers that be ( the billionaires who really run this world don't want change),control what's going on.

I don't think it has to be Bernie, it's ANY politician who gets in their way. I often wonder whether Obama had a warning, as he really changed his tune, even after his first election.

The film is black and white originally.
The thing that stayed with me my entire life is the VERY beginning when some man who looks like Colonel Sanders picks up the phone, after watching demonstrations on TV and gives the word to assassinate Kennedy!

The rest of the film shows how they practiced and trained for the assassination.
At the very END they add some information which was true, that again stayed with me my entire life.
They listed many of the people who were in contact with Oswald, witnesses, anyone involved with information about the assassination, had accidents, died etc. The list goes on and on, and the chances of all of these people dying , they had an actuary give the chances of all these particular people dying like 5 million or 5 billion to one!!! It's been a long time since I saw it, but it was high like that!
It doesn't have to be Bernie, it's ANYONE who gets in their way!

Remember Michael Connelly ( I think that's his name ) the IT guy from OHIO, who ran votes through a Republican server and they switched from Democratic to a Republican votes. He was going to testify against Karl Rove and/or Cheney, well his plane that he flew had mechanical problems it crashed and he DIED!! No one to testify against Rove/Cheney!!

The truth will set us free. The MSM corporate mouthpiece have already re-framed what is an awakening of the public to the danger of the 1%. They cleverly omit the using the word democrat following social and substitute socialist. To dispel fear, facing it is the sure way to make it crawl back into its hole. Lets make Bernie's brand understood, organic, from the people a voice of reason---especially before going to war.

In the photo, it appears he has the megaphone aimed at the charcoal grill. Anyway, it's good to have presidential candidates who show an interest in unions. The general practice is to show up on Labor Day, make a few remarks about "...all the admiration we have for the working men and women..." and then disappear until the following Labor Day. Sanders and O'Malley seem to be pushing labor issues closer to the front.
