John Kasich sits at second place in new NBC News/Marist New Hampshire poll
Source: cleveland.com (Cleveland Plain Dealer)
Donald Trump remains the Republican frontrunner for president in Iowa and New Hampshire. But Ohio Gov. John Kasich... With support from 12 percent of GOP voters, Kasich is in second place behind Trump, who leads with 28 percent in the nation's first primary state.
Close on Kasich's heels is Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon, at 11 percent. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush -- once viewed as the most likely nominee -- sits at 8 percent. Former tech executive Carly Fiorina, with 6 percent, is next.
In Iowa, which holds the first caucus, Trump tops the field at 29 percent, followed by Carson at 22 percent. No other candidate gets more than 6 percent. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who a month ago was the favorite to win Iowa, sits at 5 percent. Kasich, who hasn't campaigned much there, is at 2 percent.
...
On the Democratic side, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont has taken the lead from Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire, leading her 49 percent to 38 percent. In Iowa, the former U.S. secretary of state leads Sanders 48 percent to 37 percent.

(3,261 posts)If Trump ends up floundering and they rally around Kasich instead of Jeb, I'd feel a lot safer about the GE. Of course, they can always foist Jeb on Kasich (though I suspect they want a female VP) but I'd prefer not to have to deal with the Bushes and their money-machine.
forest444
(5,902 posts)Their mayhem machine too. It's no secret the Bushes have the unlisted phone number of, if not God, certainly the kind of people that can rock the boat just hard enough to make any Democrat's victory next November all but impossible. Think the unexpected delay of the hostages' return in 1980, or the USS Cole incident in 2000 - not to mention their cozy relationships with the oil mafias (the Saudis; the futures pirates; etc).
If Jebba-the-Hutt is nominated, they'll make sure he wins - but if Trump or anyone else in the clown car is, they won't bother. Too many favors for it to be worth their while.

(12,352 posts)Kasich is the GOP chosen one...Trump is only the distraction assigned to weed out the other GOP candidates and to keep the media attention for the GOP...smothering the Democratic message. Trump never sincerely seeks the Presidency. He's just on assignment.

1 he sells himself as a moderate .... even though he is not
2 he comes across well in person ...... it has been a few years but I kind of know him a little bit
3 TPTB want to win the White House and he might bring Ohio to the repugs
4 He is a Fox News boy and they will push him
5 Walker is fading and so is Jeb ...... Christie, Santorum, Paul, Rubio, Cruz, Perry, Huckebee,
and Bobby Jindal are all non starters
6 Wall Street and the big bank love his ass because down deep he see his job as making the
rich and poweful even more so
7 The media will push he is "the serious candidate"
8 He is a founding member of ALEC
9 The man really thinks that Jesus walked on earth so he can be president
10 When push comes to shove "they" will find a way to take Trump out of the race ...
if need be ..... but I think Trump will do something or something will come out on him
to end his run

(70,501 posts)He sold the State of Ohio's Public Employee's Retirement fund $480,000,000
worth of bad paper from Lehman Brothers and walked away w/a nice commission
and then after Lehman Brothers went belly up and he was in a Governor of Ohio
he complained about lack of money in the Public Employee's Retirement Fund.
He also sold all the profits for state liquor sales to wall street / big banks
for $5 billion and that should be worth at least $20 billion over the next
10 years ...... he did that by turning the Ohio Dept. of Development into
"Jobs Ohio" and one of his Wall Street buddies came and took over jobs Ohio
for $1 a year in pay because he wanted to "help the people in Ohio" but the
minute the borrowing money against the back end of the deal scam went through
he was gone in a heartbeat.

(806 posts)on guessing who the GOP nominee is going to be - I'd still say Bush. The establishment choice (which Bush certainly is) always seems to ultimately prevail in the GOP presidential primary and Bush brings two major assets to the table: 1) Florida and 2) the greatest appeal to hispanic voters on the GOP side outside of Rubio.
book_worm
(15,951 posts)Certainly if he can't win Iowa he is finished. The media makes a big deal out of Kasich's 12% he is supposedly the sanest of the GOPers, so does that mean that 88% of the party is still NUTS.
As for Iowa Trump needs to make sure he has an organization to make sure his voters turnout on caucus night. I don't know how organized Carson is.
On the Democratic side--there is no sugar coating it--it's not good news for Hillary Clinton in neither Iowa and especially New Hampshire.

(959 posts)Kasich is a smart Republican. But he has the personality of a cactus. He is short tempered, does not play well with others, and is incapable of hiding his contempt for those who disagree with him. He is anti union, anti public education and in the pocket of Wall St. The only decent thing he has done for Ohio is accept the Medicaid money; otherwise he could be any of the others in the pack. He will not be flamboyant and flashy though, and he is someone to take seriously, especially since all of his competition is bat-shit crazy. Kasich is not crazy or fundy or ignorant like the others. He is a smart Republican.

What will HRC do? She will pass over Sanders & O'Malley and pick Julian (more likely) or Joaquin Castro. Cory Booker a longer shot.

I agree that Kasich is probably the most dangerous. He is even warmer and pleasant thatn Hucksterbee, but only with extreme Tea Bagger ideas, instead of conservative christian AND Tea Bagger ideas. I guess that makes him a moderate in this day and age.

(2,097 posts)I've been saying this fro close to a year, and friends have thought I was nuts. But Hillary's got 3 problems going in:
1) She's charisma-impaired
2) She's the consummate DC insider at a moment when people despise DC
3) She's never actually run anything (no, State doesn't count)
Kasich is like the anti-Hillary in that regard, and is from a swing state to boot. Plus, unlike many of his fellow candidates, he doesn't have a long record of saying batshit-crazy stuff on Fox that will come back to haunt him. He's the only guy in teh clown car I worry about.

(2,577 posts)He is the darling of M$M--the Republican "moderate," all because he accepted Medicaid for Ohio. That was a very cynical move on his part just so he could put himself out there as a "moderate."
This Ohio resident knows that Kasich is anti-union, anti-education, and anti-woman. He hates transparency, which is why NO ONE, even his own party's state auditor, can have access to how public money is being used in his "Jobs Ohio." That has been so effective that Ohio's job growth lags well behind the national numbers and wages are stagnant.
He has starved public education while funneling big bucks to his buddies running failed for-profit charter schools. It is a bubbling scandal here, but not getting enough publicity.
Local governments have had their funding slashed, so roads, safety forces, etc., are struggling to provide even basic services. They are resorting to local taxes just to keep functioning. In the meantime, Kasich has cut taxes to benefit the very wealthy.
NONE OF THIS IS GETTING COVERAGE NATIONALLY IN THE MSM. He is called the "popular governor" from Ohio.
Dems need to pay very close attention to this man. He is evil, and we sure don't want him to do to the nation what he has done to Ohio.
