Dentist who killed Cecil the lion defends African hunt

Source: Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota dentist whose killing of Cecil the lion fueled a global backlash emerged Sunday for an interview in which he disputed some accounts of the hunt, expressed agitation at the animosity directed at those close to him, and said he would be back at work within days.

Walter Palmer, who has spent more than a month out of sight after becoming the target of protests and threats, intends to return to his suburban Minneapolis dental practice Tuesday. In an evening interview conducted jointly by the Associated Press and the Minneapolis Star Tribune that advisers said would be the only one granted, Palmer said again that he believes he acted legally and that he was stunned to find out his hunting party had killed one of Zimbabwe’s treasured animals.

“If I had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study, obviously I wouldn’t have taken it,” Palmer said. “Nobody in our hunting party knew before or after the name of this lion.”

Cecil was a fixture in the vast Hwange National Park and had been fitted with a GPS collar as part of Oxford University lion research. Palmer said he shot the big cat with the black mane using an arrow from his compound bow outside the park’s borders but it didn’t die immediately. He disputed conservationist accounts that the wounded lion wandered for 40 hours and was finished off with a gun, saying it was tracked down the next day and killed with an arrow.

Extradite Minnesotan Walter James Palmer to face justice in Zimbabwe.

Cecil the Lion, a resident of Zimbabwe's national park, and an national icon was poached and killed this week. Media reports in the Guardian, Wall Street Journal and elsewhere have identified American Walter Palmer, a dentist from Minneapolis, MN as the poacher. He is alleged to have lured Cecil from the safety of the national park to kill him. Two of Palmer's local accomplices are already in custody. Zimbabwe authorities now actively seeking Palmer in connection with this incident.

We urge the Secretary Of State John Kerry and the Attorney General Loretta Lynch to fully cooperate with the Zimbabwe authorities and to extradite Walter Palmer promptly at the Zimbabwe government's request.

What kind of bait did you or your "party" use to lure the animal out of the protected refuge that is Hwange National Park so that he could be killed?

Who was it who tried to destroy the collar, your or one of your party?

You pleaded guilty to poaching a black bear some time ago in Wisconsin so do you consider yourself a serial poacher?

Mon Sep 7, 2015, 11:06 AM
Sep 2015

Being struck by an arrow virtually never results in an immediate death: the targeted animal has to experience enough internal bleeding to lose its power of mobility, then lose consciousness, and then die---and that takes time. The old rule of thumb used to be that once you shot a game animal with an arrow, you sat down and smoked a cigarette, after which you started trying to find and follow a blood trail to the dead animal. The foregoing ought to give you an idea of why bow-hunting is so popular with the likes of Ted Nugent---and Nugent wannabes like this prick dentist.

from what I understand he gives the specs to the hunter and then sits around a lodge having fancy drinks and stuff, then they call them when they have the shot set up, he gets driven out to the site, takes his one shot, in this case a bow which only injured the cat (and he is claiming that is better) I suspect he uses a bow because it leaves less of a mark and he gets driven back while the guides hunt down the lion and prepare it for shipment. basically this guy is not a hunter, but someone who buys a prepared canned shot. i.e. why are these guys called hunters? beats me?

but the bow and arrow is silent - therefore avoids the anti-poaching patrol....another hole in this Pinochio's story.

Cecil was pre-selected....this is how the safari guides make their money....The rumors about Palmer's life in Minnesota have promoted that Palmer keeps his trophies in a barn on his property and already had a place for this one....

Surprising that they have yet to find Cecil's head....

The dentist is a nut, What did he expect? The lion would say I'm Cecil don't kill me.

They shot it. Wounded it and tracked it for 40 hrs so he could kill it with his bow. This was in or near a national park and Cecil had a GPS tracking collar.

This isn't hunting and it sure isn't sport. Flying half way around the world so a guide can find and track an animal and the only thing he does is releases his weapon. Might as well kill lions at the family zoo.

Tue Sep 8, 2015, 12:08 PM

Two things strike me as disgusting (along with everything else about this asshole):

(l) Taxpayers are paying for police protection for this idiot to return to work. If he can afford to pay $54,000 for a hunt (and he's paid much more than that), he can afford private security.

(2) In the Huffington Post interview he made references to how all of this has "disrupted his employees' lives". So, I'm guessing the asswipe wasn't paying his employees for the six weeks that HE made the decision to close the office. And again, if he can afford to pay upwards of $54,000 for a hunt, he can afford to pay his staff while his offices were closed.

In my humble opinion, ANYONE who would continue to work for this jerk after being furloughed for six weeks because of his disgusting actions AND anyone who would go to this jerk for dental work is a fool. I do realize that employees need their jobs, but would I hope any person who remains employed by Palmer is actively looking for different employment.
