Queen Elizabeth II becomes longest-reigning UK monarch
Source: BBC
Cheering crowds have greeted the Queen in Edinburgh on the day she becomes Britain's longest reigning monarch.
The Queen will have reigned for 63 years and seven months - calculated at 23,226 days, 16 hours and approximately 30 minutes at about 17:30 BST.
David Cameron said the service the Queen had given was "truly humbling".
Business in the Commons was postponed for half an hour so MPs, led by Mr Cameron, can pay tribute to the Queen.

(16,844 posts)gift to Charles and William. She doesn't want them to live in the fishbowl before they have to. She became queen at a young age, and she knows how awful it can be. It's not any life I would want.

(8,286 posts)I imagine that Charles will be passed over considering his wife could never be Queen. But I don't know the rules of the monarchy so I could be way wrong.

(28,581 posts)I did some looking and she would be the first Princess Consort, instead of Queen Consort. The historical precedence comes from Queen Victoria marrying Prince Albert, who was disliked and was made "prince consort".

(101,311 posts)many years after they married; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_consort
Philip has not held a title like it. The only other spouse of an English/British queen who wasn't a king in their own right (ie Philip II of Spain, and William III of England/William II of Scotland) was Anne's husband, Prince George of Denmark, who was made Duke of Cumberland (somewhat like Philip, a prince of the Greek royal family, being made Duke of Edinburgh). The point is that the 'consort' suffix was a 'promotion' for Albert.
They have stopped short of calling Camilla 'princess', because 'Princess of Wales' has been too associated with Diana. It's possible that Charles might want her promoted to that when his mother dies, or 'Queen', but that might still be pushing it, with the public. So there's no particular reason to think she'd be made a princess, and not 'Princess Consort'. Maybe she'll get a Duke/Duchess title of her own, since 'of Cornwall' belongs to the heir apparent and spouse, so William and Kate should get that when Elizabeth dies.

(101,311 posts)I don't remember hearing anything about this at the time, but that has already been officially put forward as her future title:

(380 posts)... when Charles accedes to the throne. However, he has already announced that she will not use the title. Nonetheless, she will still have legal claim to the title, just as she now has legal claim to the title of "Princess of Wales" even though she does not use it.

(2,382 posts)... if the untold billions of pounds squandered on the lavish lifestyle of the Royals was spent on something that actually benefited the people of Britain. I remember when my grandmother sailed - she wouldn't fly - back to England to attend the coronation.
Best of luck and all that, Lizzie, but I really detest monarchies in any and every form. Inbred, over-privileged narcissists are in no way intrinsically superior to we, the great unwashed.
So there.

(37,748 posts)I apply that same sentiment to game consoles, football games and comic books. We're simply squandering our money on what is at best, the merely benign... when we could be applying it to those things which actually benefits the people of all nations.
However, I do realize that we are often inconsistent on privileges we consistently maintain when it's we ourselves entertaining the prerogatives, entitlements and advantages.
So there, part two.

(19,264 posts)Slightly humourous can you imagine being William IV's son and spend your entire childhood being trained to be a future king only to have your dad live to be 78 and never inherit the crown. I mean 78 in 1480. He inherited the crown at age 46 and died 8 years later BTW.
