Twin California wildfires destroy homes; thousands evacuated

Source: AP

COBB, Calif. (AP) — Within 12 hours of igniting, a wildfire burning north of San Francisco had swallowed up more than 60 square miles of land, injured four firefighters and burned highways and buildings, prompting an emergency declaration and forcing thousands to flee.

The declaration frees up resources for the blaze, burning about 100 miles north of San Francisco.

The fire in Lake County erupted Saturday afternoon and rapidly chewed through brush and trees parched from several years of drought, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. Entire towns as well as residents along a 35-mile stretch of highway were evacuated.

The firefighters, all members of a helicopter crew, were airlifted to a hospital burn unit, where they were being treated for second-degree burns and were listed in stable condition, department spokesman Daniel Berlant said.

I'm packed and ready to go if need be, but I think we'll be alright. Fire seems to be moving away from me.

Sprinkled a bit this morning, but not enough to do any good.

Bring on that El Niño!

Won't know the status of their home for awhile. Thinking all good thoughts for everyone affected by this horrible fire.

Be safe and blessings!

that is a scary position to be in. Closest we came to was about 3 miles away, but I was ready.

Smoke coming heavily into the Truckee Meadows again.

Here is the latest link I could find on the Valley Fire (Lake & Napa counties)..it's from 1:38 PM
http://abc7news.com/news/state-of-emergency-declared-for-4000-acre-valley-fire/982006/

Latest info:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10141206496#top

Lake County Office of Emergency Services - 1-800-325-9604

Main evacuation sites are:
For Napa County..The Napa Co. Fairgrounds in Calistoga
For Lake County....Kelseyville High School, Moose Lodge in Clearlake Oaks.
& Highlands Senior Center in Clearlake.

Latest figure is that more than 1,000 homes have been destroyed.

Lake Co. public radio station KPFZ-FM 88.1 is providing constant updates on this fire and people in the area can call 707-263-3435 for latest info on other evacuation sites and more.

There are currently more than 1,000 firefighters on the ground.

UPDATE: The smoke is now lifting, so the CAL-FIRE aircraft should now be able to start dumping water on the fire

We should all pray for the many evacuees from this devastating fire
(praying for rain also might be a good idea)

God Bless all the people & animals who are in the path of the fire.
