Bernie Sanders Demands Trump Apologize To Obama For Muslim Question
Source: TPM
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) chastised fellow presidential candidate Donald Trump on Friday for allowing a man to incorrectly claim that President Obama is a Muslim. Sanders took to Twitter to demand the GOP real estate mogul apologize, and said:
This nonsense has got to end.
Trump must apologize to the president and American people for continuing the lie that the president is not an American and not a Christian.

Sanders comments were a response to an incident on Thursday at a town hall event in New Hampshire, where a man claimed that Obama was a Muslim who was not born in America. The voter then asked Trump about the problem of Muslims in America.
We have training camps growing where they want to kill us, the man said. When can we get rid of them?"

Second, it comes across that it's somehow important to note he is a Xian and not a Muslim, as if the negative is the "Muslim" part. Have to be careful we are clear about our meaning and intent.
To be clear on the subject matter though, I find any adherance and worship of sky faries and other mythological creatures to be a negative, not a positive. That being said, I just wanted to draw attention that in our rush to debunk these idiots we don't come off as racist or xenophobic ourselves.

(2,574 posts)And to all Muslims too. Both Christian Obama and Muslim Americans were caught in this Trumpites particular paranoid hate net.
Not one Republican candidate for president, not one Repub politician (including the once decent McCain under similar circumstances) has called Trump out for his racist, xenophobic endorsement of that hateful loon supporter. Just like no Repub ever denounced Trump's hate campaign when those two Trumpites brutalized a homeless immigrant last month.

(32,723 posts)But I really believe he's one of those "perception is reality" types who believes facts are subjective. It's classic Orwellian thinking where there are no actual FACTS and reality is based on what is believed. This is common thinking with people who have reinvented their own past.

But as suggested by a DUer who can't post here, I will ask the question for her: When will Bernie demand that Cornel West apologize to Obama for calling him a "niggerized president"?
THAT would actually take guts - so I wouldn't expect it to happen anytime soon.

Big difference in perpetuating a lie and someone having an opinion on what someone in office has done or not done.
I think it was way over the line, what West said, but I can also tell the difference between fact and opinion.
On Edit. As Bluenorthwest has been saying for years now, where's our apology? Where's the demand from President Obama for his words and his choices of people? Or do only certain marginalized people matter?

(34,589 posts)for his administration accusing the Left of having "@#$&ing retarded" ideas? Or for the median income of black families dropping 10% during his presidency, while cash was shoveled with both hands to the wealthiest Americans?
Incidentally, while "niggerized" was a poor choice of words due to its tendency to shock some people, it does have a specific meaning, and West is as well-suited to use it properly as is anyone.

(27,813 posts).... "yeah, but what about what the other guy said" response.
As I used to tell my daughter, when your only excuse for you poor behaviour is to tell me that your brother's behaviour is worse, you've already lost the argument.
But no worries. I'm sure BS aligning himself with West, who is widely despised by the AA demographic that Bernie can't get any traction with, will work out extremely well.

See this is where folks lose me and aren't credible - they're going to insist Sanders get in the middle of West's feud with Obama, something even Obama isn't willing to engage. That's bullshit.
NanceGreggs
(27,813 posts)Obviously Bernie is not going to question the remarks, as disgusting as they may have been, of someone who he has chosen to ally himself with.
The real question here would be: What was BS thinking when, given his failure to gain any traction with the AA demographic whose support he desperately needs, he decided that a man who is despised by the vast majority of that key group would be a good idea?
And BTW, I seriously doubt that Obama "ignored" West's remarks. He's just too classy to have made an issue of them, or respond to them.
riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)to equate his "courage" with that.
As for your second "real" question, well that's a complete word salad. I have no idea what you're asking.
NanceGreggs
(27,813 posts)But I'm sure BS's allying himself with West will do wonders for his support among AAs who find West's remarks disgusting, and his tirades against Obama - still widely respected and supported by the AA demographic - to be truly insulting.
Way to go, Bernie.

(14,570 posts)disagree with him most of the time, I thought he showed class that one time when he was doing that town hall in 2008 and some lady lathered up by right wing talk show hate gave the same spiel. Remember?
McCain said, "No, Ma'am, he's not a Muslim. He's a good man, but we just disagree." Something like that.
Now we have the t-Rump and he doesn't even have the guts to correct the ignorant hate-rant. And it isn't even really Trump's total classlessness that bothers me, even though the man is completely devoid of class.
It is his followers. Now we must all ask the question if the Republican establishment, who clearly wants to get Trump out of the race, succeeds, what will his followers do?
Brown shirt, anyone?

(45,251 posts)remember, somewhat to his credit, he was running on McCain Feingold, so a limited budget. (He did cheat some, with things like free rides on his wife's plane, but the DNC complained to the FEC and he had to repay the money.) And, as we see, he is still getting good p.r. from it.
He sounded rehearsed, the woman did not. . Maybe the questions from the audience were obtained in advance and McCain had the answers ready. Or maybe the campaign knew the question was bound to come up and he had his answer. In any event, I thought she was either authentic or a good actress, but he was not surprised by her question and had prepared the answer in advance. Obviously, it's only my gut feeling.

(3 posts)Trump camp adopts keep hope alive as new slogan
Says it captures silver spoon's appeal to those seeking to recreate themselves
The campaign of Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump announced Monday that its adopting keep hope alive as its new mantra.
The catchphrase previously served as the slogan for one-time Democratic presidential hopeful Jesse Jackson, who also unsuccessfully pursued the nations highest office in 1984 and 1988. It will complement the Trump teams existing Make America Great Again catchphrase, rather than replace it, according to campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski.
We feel like the new saying connects with our core supporters, said Lewandowski, who was tagged as Trumps top political advisor after the departure of Roger Stone - the Reality TV personalitys longtime friend and advisor.
Our polls indicate we do very well with Americans who think the truth is whatever they can convince others to believe, Lewandowski said. This new slogan speaks to their universal desire for a mulligan. Regardless of whether youre a corporate life form embracing a new business name to escape the past like say Comcast and Xfinity or an individual who has made some mistakes like Ron Artest."
Artest, a former basketball star, adopted the name Metta World Peace after his role in a 2004 brawl between the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons and their fans.
