Lincoln (NE) passes discrimination ordinance (based on sexual orientation and gender identity)

LINCOLN — The Lincoln City Council voted 5-0 Monday to adopt an ordinance that would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Council members Adam Hornung and Jon Camp abstained from the vote. They argued that state law would require Lincoln voters to enact the change as part of the city's charter.

A seven-hour hearing last week attracted scores of people who wanted to weigh in on both sides of the issue.

Some, including the Lincoln Independent Business Association, urged the council to consider putting the measure up for a public vote.
