Los Angeles Puts $100 Million Into Helping Homeless

Source: New York Times

LOS ANGELES — Declaring the growing homeless population a public emergency, the Los Angeles City Council is planning to spend $100 million to help get people off the streets.

In announcing the plan, city officials said Tuesday that they would focus on paying for housing and other programs, including a proposal from Mayor Eric Garcetti to spend $13 million this year on short-term rental subsidies and other services.

Homeless encampments have increasingly appeared under freeway overpasses, in parks and on sidewalks across this sprawling city, where a majority of the estimated 26,000 homeless people live on the city’s streets and not in its shelters.

“This city has pushed this problem from neighborhood to neighborhood for too long, from bureaucracy to bureaucracy,” Mr. Garcetti said during a news conference in front of City Hall. “Every single day we come to work, we see folks lying on this grass, a symbol of our city’s intense crisis.”

I see a lot of job creation for public workers...l. some new cars, a truck or two and poof, not dick going to actually anything to actually help but a very few homeless people. Lots of great photo ops for Garcetti and whoever is the person in charge of the program..

They also have no real idea of how many "homeless people" there are in reality in LA and surrounding areas.

The homeless street population of LA has increased 12% since Garcetti took office in 2013. Appalling since the US is the wealthiest country in the history of the world, California has more than 100 Billionaires and is one of the world's largest economies. This new program to shelter and assist the homeless of LA will be a help, hopefully.

i had this dream of when i wasn't(i am), and had money(i don't)

a 'camp'
not a refugee or concentration camp

a camp where one can work to get credit to built a cabin (small...call it 15x15 foot plus sleeper second floor)?

but self maintaining

has own solar
has own wind
has own water
allows for cabin+small yard (square yard gardening 4x4 times say 5 or 6 or more)
allows for a few chickens and or goats

has a central building with 'party facility'

where people teach you how to build your house, and you only buy into the land and the material

yes very commune similar
