High school football player dies after being hurt in game

WASHINGTON, N.J. (AP) A New Jersey high school star quarterback died after suffering an injury on the field, school officials said Saturday.
Three-sport athlete Evan Murray of Warren Hills Regional High School died after he was hurt in a game against Summit High School on Friday night. Murray had been the football team's starting quarterback for three years.
A statement from interim Superintendent Gary Bowen said the school community is "deeply saddened" by his death. Bowen declined to take questions from reporters Saturday, saying a cause of death has not yet been determined. Authorities said an autopsy was planned.
People who attended the game said the 17-year-old Murray walked off the field under his own power after taking a hit in the backfield late in the second quarter. A short time later, he apparently collapsed.

(12,882 posts)Just look at all the cage-fighting and boxing worship.
I'll even go so far as to say that Trump is a symptom of that violence worship. It's all about beating your opponents with physical force and bellicose bravado.
I have a grandson who survived high school football and I'm thankful he wasn't good enough to get to college on his gridiron skills.

(25 posts)That is so sad for the family of that kid. Sounds like he had a bright future.
I wonder if he was one of those kids with an undiagnosed heart problem (the link doesn't say what caused his death). I think we've all read stories about that where this type of thing has happened in the past.

White light to the family. Sad news indeed.

New Jersey high school football player died from lacerated spleen
NEW YORK | BY DANIEL BASES
A New Jersey high school football player's death on Saturday was the result of massive internal bleeding from a lacerated spleen, the medical examiner said in a statement on Monday.
The autopsy showed Evan Murray, the quarterback of the Warren Hills Regional High School, had an abnormally large spleen, thereby making it more susceptible to injury.
"The autopsy determined that the cause of death was massive intra-abdominal hemorrhage (massive internal bleeding) due to a laceration of the spleen," Morris County, New Jersey Medical Examiner Dr. Ronald Suarez said in a statement published by local media.
Suarez said there was no evidence of head trauma or heart disease and ruled the death accidental.

And I wish that schools pushed the arts as hard as they do sports. But that's not going to happen, either.
