Lady Gaga to be named Woman of the Year by Billboard

Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) — Lady Gaga is the woman of the year, according to Billboard magazine.

Billboard announced Tuesday that the pop star will be honored at its Dec. 11 Women in Music event in New York City. The decade-old event will be televised for the first time, on Lifetime on Dec. 18.

Gaga released the collaborative jazz album, "Cheek to Cheek," with Tony Bennett last year. It won a Grammy Award, and the duo performed songs from the album on a 36-date tour.

Gaga also plans to release an album next year and will star in FX's "American Horror Story: Hotel," which premieres on Oct. 7.

I used to ask Lady Who? Then I heard her sing. I read about her stand on progressive politics like LGBT rights. The Tony Bennett duo on video is killer. And then this year at the Academy Awards!

You do have to hear her sing. Otherwise, it seems like all gimmick.

My daughter and husband had to point that out to me. I guess there are just too many pop tarts out there. I get cynical.

Quite some time ago, I heard Amy Winehouse sing. I had not seen pictures of her. I knew nothing about her. I just knew I was hearing talent and emotion.

I wonder about myself sometimes. Maybe it is best to listen and hear before we see. And that goes for more than singing!

"Meat dress" and other outlandish costumes aside, the woman is simply and marvelously talented. She deserves the honor. Also, anyone who chooses her stage name from a song by Queen, is okay in my book. You go, girl!

Taylor Swift's 1989 album is one of the most perfect pop albums ever, and it's spawning hit after hit. I've never liked her, but even I have been impressed by this release.

As much as I love Lady Gaga (THAT VOICE!!!), she hasn't had nearly the chart presence that Swift has, during this past year.

I think Lady Gaga deserved this honor in years past, just not this year.
