Tomorrow on NY Radio We'll Be Dropping a Bomb on Facebook
Source: Al Giordano, Narco News
Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 30 at 6 p.m. ET I'm going on the radio in the media capital of the world at the peak of afternoon drive time.
I've been asked to speak for Narco News and the nonprofit Fund for Authentic Journalism, and I'll announce that we're taking our 27,000+ Facebook users to Tsu as our response to Facebook and Instagram owner Mark Zuckerberg banning links to his upstart competitor last weekend.
And I'll invite all of New York City to join us in the exodus to our new social media home.
<snip>
It's all going to happen on The Katie Halper Show, which is a popular Big Apple radio program y'all should be listening to anyway. Katie is a 2010 graduate of the School of Authentic Journalism, and has returned each year since as one of its professors. She's a social humorist, stand-up comic and authentic journalist. The Katie Halper show on 99.5 FM WBAI in New York, in her first few months on the air, has quickly become a must listen event each Wednesday afternoon.

For readers, friends and supporters in or near New York City, Im in town this week also to celebrate Narco News' 15th anniversary with readers, supporters and friends. If youd like to join the party Saturday evening, send me an email at narconews@gmail.com for an invitation. We'll start at 8 p.m. And if you've attended any of our previous anniversary fetes, you know already it's an amazing, interesting crowd that includes graduates and professors from the School of Authentic Journalism, the best readers in the word, and artists and journalists of accomplishment in their own fields.

Authors note: After various months of researching and writing a book about my earliest adventures in community organizing and media during my teens and early twenties, came the news that one of the people Ive been writing about, John Kerry, was nominated by President Barack Obama as the next US Secretary of State. Today, the US Senate foreign relations committee confirmed his nomination. Ive known Kerry through three decades, worked for him twice, covered him as a reporter, argued and fought with him including many times when he was a guest on my talk radio show when I thought him wrong and have also had his back when hes done the right thing. The following text is excerpted and adapted from the still untitled book. My main motive for these writings is to share lessons learned about organizing and media, strategy and tactics, and the experiences that taught those lessons, with the next generations of organizers and journalists. Id also like to express my profound appreciation to my book editor, Katherine Faydash, for cleaning this chapter up so skillfully and ahead of schedule. Al Giordano.

(27,509 posts)Banamex v. Narco News, 2001 603429/00, was a New York Supreme Court case that extended the findings of New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, that freedom of the press applied to an online newspaper's reporting.
The court found that: "Narco News, its website, and the writers who post information, are entitled to all the First Amendment protections accorded a newspaper-magazine or journalist... Furthermore, the nature of the articles printed on the website and Mr. Giordano's statements at Columbia University constitute matters of public concern because the information disseminated relates to the drug trade and its affect [sic] on people living in this hemisphere..."[1]

(498 posts)Someone I've never heard of, some group I've never heard of is moving from the largest social network in the world to a thing that's invite only?
I'm sure zuckerberg can handle the exodus.
I doubt they'll be taking a single user with them... because all those user's family members, friends etc are all on facebook.
It's going to take something crazy big to eat away at facebook. This isn't it.
Oh and some ny radio show.. ny and ca are not the centers of the universe.
Hah That's great and all... but my real point is why is this on du and why should I care?

(27,509 posts)They were both *successfully* represented by EFF - the Electonic Frontiers Foundation.
Al Giordano is at the leading edge of journalism - and he has been for decades.
And the Banamex lawsuit was crucial in establishing freedom of the press for websites like DU.
If not for Al, the lawsuit against DU could have gone the other way - and there would be no DU today.
A lot of newer DUers are probably unaware of this:

Skinner, are you going to need a fundraiser for this ?

I know you can't comment on the suit for obvious reasons, but do you need more funds ? The litigation looks to be very expensive.

1. We are very fortunate that we are receiving pro-bono legal representation from EFF.

I really can't comment on the case. But I will say this: Some people here have said that we won, or that the case is over. THIS IS NOT CORRECT. The case is still going on.
