Abbas: Palestine a state under occupation, no longer bound by Oslo accords
Source: Times of Israel
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday that the PA would cease to abide by agreements signed with Israel, including the 1993 Oslo accords, claiming Israel had shown that it, too, was no longer committed to them.
So long as Israel refuses to commit to the agreements signed with us, cease settlement construction and release prisoners, Israel has left us no choice but to insist that we will not remain the only ones committed to these agreements, Abbas told the UN General Assembly in New York.
Israel, he said, must now fully assume all its responsibilities as an occupying power
our patience for a long time has come to an end.

It is no longer useful to waste time in negotiations for the sake of negotiations; what is required is to mobilize international efforts to oversee an end to the occupation in line with the resolutions of international legitimacy, he said. Until then, I call upon the United Nations to provide international protection for the Palestinian people in accordance with international humanitarian law.

Unless he walks this back pretty quickly, this puts things legally and formally back where they were before 1993--there will be no more Palestinian cooperation on preventing terrorist attacks, and members of Israel's armed forces will have to serve as law enforcement and the state of Israel will be responsible for all civic government functions in all of the West Bank.

(5,632 posts)He's calling for UN intervention to enforce established resolutions and agreements. (Both sides have pretty much pissed all over the agreements ... in a sense he is just acknowledging they are inoperative.) Given Israel's tendency to seize land and isolate Palestinian communities, if he doesn't obtain UN support and enforcement it is only a matter of time before Israel achieves a "one state solution" (their nomenclature for it).
He won't get that support, of course. Hamas' actions have completely undermined his position. But I see why he feels he has to try.

The Palestinian Authority right now is Israel's rent-a-cop. They can't have any internal credibility while serving as a pro-Israel security organization.
The Israelis right now are getting all of the benefits of the one-state solution without bearing any of the costs. Vice-versa for the Palestinians.
The Israelis have it too good right now for any progress to be made.

"Abu Mazen's speech is deceitful and encourages incitement and destruction in the Middle East," Netanyahu's office said.
Abbas also accused Israel of refusing to commit to past agreements, leaving the Palestinians with "no choice but to insist that we will not remain the only ones committed to the implementation of these agreements, while Israel continuously violates them."
But Netanyahu called on Abbas to accept his offer and engage in direct negotiations with Israel, without preconditions.
"The fact that the offer is refused time and again is the best possible proof that he is not looking for a peace agreement," Netanyahu's office said.

(62 posts)time to face the facts, Israel is an occupying power who has not demonstrated any intention of ever bringing peace to the region, only theft and murder for decades.
