Hillary Clinton to Propose New Gun Measures, Campaign Says

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Monday will detail new proposals aimed at closing gun sale loopholes and holding accountable those who sell guns for violence committed with those weapons.

Seizing the moment following last week’s mass shooting in Oregon, Clinton will call for the repeal of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which gives legal protection to gun manufacturers and dealers whose guns are used for criminal activity, said a campaign official, who asked not to be named, previewing the announcement Clinton plans to make on the campaign trail in New Hampshire. As a senator from New York, Clinton voted against the law in 2005 and, the official said, would lead an effort to repeal it if elected president.

Clinton appeared viscerally frustrated as she spoke after Thursday’s shooting at Umpqua Community College, in which authorities say a student killed nine people before turning one of several guns he had with him on himself. “What is wrong with us, that we cannot stand up to the NRA and the gun lobby, and the gun manufacturers they represent?” Clinton said Friday at Broward College in Davie, Florida. “We don’t just need to pray for these people. We need to act.”

In staking out a hardline position on guns, Clinton is capitalizing on an issue where she stands to the left of her closest opponent in the Democratic primary, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Sanders has a mixed record on gun control—he voted against the Brady Bill in 1993 and in favor of restrictions on the size of gun magazines—that he attributes to the gun culture of his rural state. He responded to the shootings in Charleston, South Carolina, and in Oregon with promises to implement “sensible gun-control legislation” and to improve mental health services, but has not yet offered specific proposals..................

Before Ore shooting, Clinton was already talking tough on guns and the NRA. Now she's adding to her policy proposals. http://bloom.bg/1M5omla

I remember when she was in congress, and she went against nearly every progressive issue. Then she became secretary of state and tried to sell us on a war with Iran. Now she's pulling the tell all the liberals what they want to hear crap. Sorry, she proved who she is when I saw her go conservative on nearly every issue. And, Bernie Sanders has proved himself by going against the conservatives on nearly every issue I care about. I wouldn't vote for Jeb Bush so why would I consider voting for Hillary.

Just like her newfound support for lgbt rights after her email went public showing she cared more about what Palin and Fox News viewers thought than what gay parents feel when they have to choose gender biased labels.

Sanders Votes for Background Checks, Assault Weapons Ban

WASHINGTON, April 17 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today voted for expanded background checks on gun buyers and for a ban on assault weapons but the Senate rejected those central planks of legislation inspired by the shootings of 20 first-grade students and six teachers in Newtown, Conn.

“Nobody believes that gun control by itself is going to end the horrors we have seen in Newtown, Conn., Aurora, Colo., Blacksburg, Va., Tucson, Ariz. and other American communities,” Sanders said. “There is a growing consensus, however, in Vermont and across America that we have got to do as much as we can to end the cold-blooded, mass murders of innocent people. I believe very strongly that we also have got to address the mental health crisis in our country and make certain that help is available for people who may be a danger to themselves and others,” Sanders added.

The amendment on expanded background checks needed 60 votes to pass but only 54 senators voted for it. “To my mind it makes common sense to keep these weapons out of the hands of people with criminal records or mental health histories,” Sanders said.

Under current federal law, background checks are not performed for tens of thousands of sales – up to 40 percent of all gun transfers – at gun shows or over the Internet. The amendment would have required background checks for all gun sales in commercial settings regardless of whether the seller is a licensed dealer. The compromise proposal would have exempted sales between “family, friends, and neighbors.”

In a separate roll call, the Senate rejected a proposal to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. That proposal was defeated by a vote of 60 to 40.

Bernie Sanders thrills huge Boston crowd with call to fight racism and reform gun law

He suggested the US should enact several plans, including closing the loophole that allow unlicensed gun dealers to sell without background checks, “end the sale and distribution of semi-automatic weapons whose only goal is to kill people”, and start “a revolution in terms of mental health in this country”.

“Maybe if we do all of these things we can lessen the likelihood of these horrendous disasters,” he said.

Campaign staffers could not immediately provide an official estimate for the crowd inside the packed Boston Convention Center, but the venue can hold more than 25,000 people and organizers estimated that some 4,000 people filled the overflow room after the main hall filled up. Others braved cold, wet weather to watch the speech outside on a Jumbotron.

Most firearms injuries and deaths are the result of the products working as they were designed to do. The don't normally explode in the shooters' hands.
I would like to see are legal owners to be held criminally and civilly liable if their carelessness allows their weapon to be used in any crime. That would put many gun owners on notice that they could either go to prison, pay a hefty fine and or have a financial judgment against them when they don't act responsibly in properly securing their weapons from getting into the hands of others. They may even want to purchase liability insurance like motor vehicle owners do to help protect their financial assets. The more weapons one owns, the more costly the insurance, and many will divest of the multiple guns some of them own due to the expense of owning so many.
Of course that would require having firearms registered to their respective owners and that would have the white supremist racists and their congressional supporters "up in harms", so to speak, about a government "plan to confiscate all privately-owned weapons".

This doesn't stop approved gun owners from giving their weapons to others, which is know to occur when there are multiple firearms purchases for the purpose of giving them to other family members to avoid that hassle of going through their own background checks. If ever the now illegal firearm is found to be in the wrong hands, all the legal owner just has to say is that he or she forgot and left his weapon somewhere where his/her family member had access to it.
