Donald Trump: Redskins a 'positive' name, Washington shouldn't change
Source: ESPN
The Washington Redskins picked up another Republican endorsement for their nickname. This time, Donald Trump did something he has rarely done -- agreeing with a stance by presidential rival Jeb Bush -- when he voiced support for the Redskins' name.
Monday, Trump came out in favor of the team keeping its nickname in an interview with the New York Times. Bush did the same with SiriusXM radio last week.
"Honestly, I don't think they should change the name, unless the owner wanted to," Trump told the Times.
But Trump also told the newspaper that the name had been in use a long time and not everyone views it as a slur. And, he viewed it as "unnecessary political correctness," adding to his record of being anything but.

(13,184 posts)Most of them could care less about this, especially in the face of real issues, like unemployment, underdevelopment, alcoholism and addiction.
Nobody calls anybody "redskins" unless they're referring to members of that football team.
It's a feel-good PC issue.

(2,807 posts)It's a bullshit name and a bullshit owner of a bullshit franchise. Not to mention that they suck.
Shove that PC, right-wing talking point pablum.

(13,184 posts)It came in two parts: name-calling and aggression. Other than that, poof.

(8,702 posts)It's a racist term. I know that Native Americans have had problems with that football name for years and would liked it changed.
I have Native American blood in me, but that doesn't mean anything. It's a racist term and un-American.
NonMetro
(631 posts)In the 19th century, Native Americans referred to themselves as "red men" to distinguish themselves from "white men". Of course, their skin isn't really "red" anyway. But did some Indians consider themselves to have "red skin"? Possibly?

(10,056 posts)Racism that was so deep and pervasive that it led to the extermination of millions of Native Americans.

(2,188 posts)All my life the team was called the Redskins. Hard to change now.
The name was meant to honor and remember the fighting spirit of Native Americans. Eliminating all the various team names, such as Braves, Chiefs, etc, Native American culture will not only have been submerged, but soon forgotten altogether.
