AP NewsBreak: Alaska Hired Consultants Ahead of Obama Visit
By becky bohrer, associated press
·JUNEAU, Alaska — Oct 6, 2015, 10:26 PM ET

Gov. Bill Walker's administration spent $50,000 on consultants to help prepare for a visit by President Barack Obama and nearly another $2,000 on a professional photographer to capture what was described as a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

The expenditures were revealed in public records obtained by The Associated Press and came at a time when state spending is under renewed scrutiny as Alaska grapples with multibillion-dollar budget deficits amid low oil prices.

The firm Perkins Coie was hired in a contract running from July 8 to Aug. 31, when Obama arrived in Alaska for a multiday visit. The contract was for up to $50,000 — the final amount paid, Walker spokeswoman Katie Marquette said Tuesday.

Obama visited Alaska over three days in late August and early September, speaking at a U.S. State Department-hosted Arctic climate summit in Anchorage before traveling to outlying communities as part of an effort to draw attention to climate change concerns.

Here's a photo of Gov. Walker, a very fine figure of a governor, which you will find suitable for framing, should you wish to print it.

so I'm not really upset by this.

That said; I have to remark on your phrase "libertarian Bernie only clutch fetch". I'm not even sure what that means.

I assume you're referring to supporters of Bernie Sanders. I'm not sure what Sanders has to do with the the subject of this thread. I also don't understand how you can consider Sanders supporters to be Libertarians.

I also don't think I've ever heard the term "clutch fetch" before, but I can more or less discern it's meaning from the context.

It was a rare & historic visit.

From the article, the money came from the Governor's office budget which has funds set aside for contingency expenses lIke this. Money wasn't diverted from the state's operating budget.

With all the money squandered in government, this is nothing to get worked up about.

Even excellent pictures of the President had incredible views of Alaska that did not go unnoticed. There is nothing like the President visiting to get real coverage and this visit was completely around nature.

Much of the trip echoed the work of the State Department where the US now heads the Arctic group of nations that are dealing with climate change. Obama being there increased the coverage by a huge amount emphasizing the message . (For comparison, how much coverage did anyone here read on the second annual international conference on the health of the Oceans that was held this week in Chili - even though Secretary Kerry went and Obama not only sent a video, but announced new US actions? In many ways the two conferences are similar and both are partly in preparation for the Paris climate change summit. )

and they apparently did a good job. Unless this was a nobid contract to the governors son in law or something similar, no story here.

7. I don't get it. Why did they need a consultant? Red states don't know how to talk to democrats?

I notice Gov. Walker has run in the GOP and as an independent.

He doesn't consider the prez a muslim without a US birth certificate? He wants pictures with the pres? WTH?
He's probably going to be thrown out of the republican party for this. I guess I'm used to the reich wing being extreme nutcases.

I could understand hiring a PR-type firm but a law firm?
The trip went smoothly but I have my doubts about what Perkins Coie allegedly did.

clothes so as not to offend the nose the prez. Don't do stupid, such as offering to drive the prez to a mosque for prayers. (He has people to do that.) Don't demand to see his birth certificate. (He doesn't carry it around with him.) Don't have pork on the lunch menu. Have state troopers block Sarah Palin from approaching within earshot of the prez. I didn't read of any misadventures, so I guess Gov. Walker's contract was a success. Good contractors -- they worked their asses off.
