Freedom Caucus endorses Rep. Webster for Speaker

Source: the hill.com

The conservative House Freedom Caucus is endorsing long-shot Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Fla.) for Speaker, potentially depriving any candidate from securing enough votes on the floor this month.

The endorsement of Webster, who won just 12 votes for Speaker against now-retiring John Boehner (R-Ohio) in January, is a major blow to House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

"House Freedom Caucus has endorsed @RepWebster for speaker of the House. He will restore respect to our institution," Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), a founding member of the group, tweeted.

McCarthy is expected to win the majority of the GOP conference needed to win the nomination on Thursday - a minimum of 124 votes - but will need 218 votes during the floor vote to formally elect a new Speaker on Oct. 29.

Thus McCarthy has to pick up 94 votes out of like the remainder of the caucus. I wonder if there is any chance McCarthy can be blocked or if it's just a formality.
