Armed Protesters Gather As Obama Visits Oregon Shooting Victims' Families
Source: talkingpointsmemo.com
Gun-toting protesters gathered on Friday morning to await President Obama's arrival in Roseburg, Ore., where he planned to meet with the families of victims of last week's mass shooting at Umpqua Community College.
But local residents planned to protest Obama's visit, saying he rushed to "politicize" the tragedy by pushing a gun control agenda.
"My family, my friends, everybody down here is not happy about him coming," Michelle Finn, a Umpqua alumna and Roseburg native, told the Oregonian. "He already says he's going to politicize this he's already going to push his agenda."

(10,164 posts)A lot of folks from elsewhere don't realize how severe the urban/rural divide is here in Oregon. The big (by our standards) population centers are very left-leaning, and as our presidential voting shows, outnumber the rural areas. But those rural areas, which include small cities like Roseburg, are very conservative (in that typical libertarian Western way...not the Wall Street corporate type). A lot of those protesters not only oppose additional gun controls, but a lot of them probably think Obama is a Muslim, and/or Kenyan. Not to mention a socialist. And so forth (add your own idiotic RW meme about Obama here)...
It's Fox News Zombie Apocalypse country outside of the Willamette Valley, Ashland, and maybe Bend.

(631 posts)We have them same urban/rural divide here in Michigan, and I have a friend from Illinois who says it's the same there. Republicans, everywhere have exploited this forever. I've never been able to quite explain it, but for some reason, many small town and rural people feel superior to city people, and many openly despise city people. I've lived in both, and city people are far friendlier than small towner's, too, even though most small towner's consider themselves the friendliest people in the world! Nothing is universal about this, and I've met big city bigots and small town liberals. It just seems there are certain dominant characteristics, and it is clear there are far more Republicans and conservatives in rural areas than in the cities - because that's how they vote.

I'll tell you why...collaborators like Hillary Clinton do not go after guys like Rupert Murdoch because they are too in deep with each other due to money.

Does anyone have the common courtesy to treat the POTUS with the respect he gives to them? I'm totally ashamed of these clowns and glad I don't live near enough to hear what they are saying about Obama. Our society is beyond help, it seems.

They're taking their cues from their beloved GOP. Way too many examples to list here.

(323 posts)in almost any other country, wouldn't these protesters have been rounded up and either imprisoned or executed before they could even break out their poorly spelled signs? Since it did not happen here, maybe they need to rethink their opinion that President Obama is a tyrant who wants to deprive them of their rights. But they won't.

(5,279 posts)The next step is making gun sales without one illegal everywhere.
The next step is ammo sales being limited to 21 and older unless in military or police.
The next step is titling every firearm the same way we do cars.
Then licenses for firearms just like drivers licenses.
Read the second amendment carefully. There is not a single reference to guns. It uses the blanket term "arms"; as in, a tool used to cause physical harm to individuals and animals.
The USA has a long history of regulating weapons. Dating all the way back to immediately after the American Revolutionary War. In the, then, capital of Philadelphia they regulated the public carrying of swords and pistols.
The massively hated and mostly widow dressing "Brady Bill", enacted under Saint Ronny.
Clinton caught the majority of the shit for it.
The horrors of a militarized police and massive civil spying network so feared by 2nd A fans during Clinton; came to pass under Bush.
Obama caught shit for it.
The fear is being sent from above to inspire the masses to hunker down and not look at what could be.

Just like marijuana legalization advocates were and are.
Just like civil rights advocates (or deniers) were and are.
Just like women's suffragettes were.
Just like prohibitionists were.
Just like rum runners were.
Just like Pro and Anti slavery forces were.
Background checks are feared for a single reason. A huge shitload of people illegally own firearms. And UBC will slam the door on them getting any more.

(6,241 posts)"Why should I have to take off my shoes at the airport? I'm not a psycho idiot that's going to blow up a plane." With guns it's "Why should I give up my firearms? I'm not a psycho idiot that's going to shoot up a school."
Just because there are criminals and crazy people that want to misuse tools, doesn't mean everyone should have to give them up.
Now, personally, I wouldn't want to have a gun in my house. I don't want my kids to pick them up. I keep my sword in the top of my locked closet. But I would never tell a law abiding person they couldn't have a gun if they felt unsafe.
I'd like to see more background checks. I'd like to see mandatory safety classes, which include lessons on legal times you can use deadly force to defend yourself. But I am against outright outlawing.

(12,194 posts)I doubt 18 year olds who pass a background check and buy a rifle are going to like it if they can buy the rifle or shotgun but not the ammunition.
And this license will allow public carry?
How is the brady bill which background checks ALL firearms at retail, 'mostly window dressing'?
Half-Century Man
(5,279 posts)I believe firearm purchases should be limited to persons over 21, the standard we hold to purchase alcohol. However I believe firearms can be given to those between 18-21 by family; this is a traditional right of passage/recognition of adulthood thing in the USA. Buying ammo and guns is not so much.
Open carry; My opinion is open carry should be regulated. If you have a legitimate reason; verifiable circumstances of sudden exposure to danger (ie camping in bear country), employment; that is okay.
Concealed carry. Once again, regulated. The only reason for concealed carry is human beings and verifiable danger from them.
My bad, my timeline was wonky. The Brady Bill was enacted under Clinton, and still was wanting as firearm legislation. Pleas see http://www.democraticunderground.com/10027252393.

I do business in these parts of Oregon and they are mostly "good people" until politics come up and then it's nothing but racisim, sexism and stupidity. I keep asking people why they vote r and all they can tell me is why they dont vote d, and it's the same ole shit, they hate black, brown, yellow, gay, city folk - basically anything that ain't whitebread stupid they are against.

(22,000 posts)The city I lived in had very few minorities back then and there was rumored to be a local KKK chapter (for clarification, I don't know this for sure). I lived there from the time I was about 11 until I was 18. Thankfully I moved to Portland and went to school and lived there for 11 years before moving overseas. Personally I have a strong distaste for the area because of the racism.
