Miners union to Walter Energy: 'It can't always be about more money. Judas had more money'

Source: Al.com

By Kelly Poe

The union miners of Walter Energy sent a clear message to executives at a demonstration Wednesday: respect our contracts or lose our labor.

"We've got a union that will fight you in the court house. We will fight out in the White House. We will fight you in the halls of congress, and yes, we will fight you in the pickets if we have to," United Mine Workers of America President Cecil Roberts said to a crowd of about 2,000 at Brookwood City Park Wednesday morning.

It's the union's latest attempt to defend its health benefits and pensions while the executives at Walter seek concessions as it struggles to get out of bankruptcy.

Walter Energy filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July, declaring plans to emerge "reorganized and debt free" by February. Executives had said they're seeking significant concessions from the union, citing that the price of coal is less than a third of what it was when union contracts were negotiated.

Hey, it's CAPITALISM, baby! The corporations have a fiduciary and MORAL obligation to maximize returns for their stockholders. All you working guys that vote republican and loooove capitalism can't start complaning now. /sarcasm

Maybe, just maybe you all down in ALABAMA should start voting your economic interests, stop being played on "social/racial" issues, and start voting Democratic?
