Indiana student arrested in attack on Muslim woman

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — A 19-year-old Indiana University student accused of trying to remove a Muslim woman's headscarf in a racially motivated attack says he had been drinking alcohol and hadn't taken his anti-anxiety medication prior to the incident.

Court records show Triceten D. Bickford faces multiple felony charges including intimidation, strangulation and battery in the Saturday evening attack in a cafe in Bloomington, Indiana. He was released on $500 bond and returned to class Monday.

A city police report says officers responded to reports of an assault at a cafe around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The report says a 47-year-old woman was sitting at a table with her 9-year-old daughter when a man shouted epithets and racially charged threats at the woman, including "white power" and "kill them all."

According to the report, the man then grabbed the woman by the neck and forced her head toward the table, restricting her breathing while trying to take off her headscarf. The report says her husband and passers-by were able to pull the man off and restrained him on the sidewalk until police arrived.

5. He won't get a day in jail

He's going to blame the lack of his medication which will work if jury experiences continue the way they have. If I was the woman, I'd ask her lawyer to demand the judge pass the verdict alone. That is the only way justice might prevail.

6. Victim can't push for a bench trial

Only the defendant can agree to it. I would like to think that they could get a conviction. It already looks like white privilege with the downplayed charges and the low bail. Not only did he assault a woman without provocation he also resisted arrest and bit an officer. I can't see that at a minimum how they did not throw his butt into a mental health facility for evaluation.

The fact he terrorized this innocent woman, and her family couldn't matter less. He is, after all, really WHITE. Even looks like a pig.

Is that short for broad brush, like the one you used to paint Indiana with? I lived in Bloomington for over 25 years. Bloomington is a very progressive community. This person is not representative of the community and I didn't see any references to Klan activity in the AP article. Maybe jump would be a better name, as in jump to conclusions.

I've lived in Indiana my entire life and I am in my mid fifties. I doubt you know the history any better than I do. My response is about the knee-jerk reaction of Klan involvement. I'm not defending what happened nor am I looking for a fight. I agree that the bail doesn't smell good but would not be so hasty from afar to attribute it to a judge in a white robe with a hood. Progressives in Indiana take enough crap from the local RWNJs without enduring more from electronic interlopers without supporting evidence. We all walk in shoes no one else has worn at some point. It does not grant license to throw mud on an entire group of people, even if they are Hoosiers. I will not be responding again unless you can recount for me the last time you were in Bloomington and had a negative experience. I am not your enemy, I wish you well.

10. Our neighbor has a cute scarf

she wears when she jogs with her husband. She always has her head and most of her face covered. Nice couple and great kids. They give us a bunch of apples every year from their tree.

I don't think their daughter is going to be traditional though - she changes out of her head scarf as soon as she gets to school. The father asked me once how I control my daughters. I told him I don't. I just talk to them and let them make their own decisions (which are far better than mine were at their age).

so that question is moot. I have no doubt that he is very paternalistic in his attitude towards women. I suspect he would be horrified by my attitudes. We never got past initial neighborly discussions. I don't talk to my neighbors much (or to anyone for that matter).

but the implication was he was concerned about his daughter "living the American dream" so to speak. In some ways he is very close to being like my high school friend's dad. They were a Pentecostal family that required their daughter (my friend) to wear dresses and no makeup. My daughters have told me that my neighbor's daughter definitely loses the head covering before reaching school. I think my neighbor was also concerned about boys.

I obviously can't get into his child rearing practices so long as no abuse is going on. The young woman is a Biology student at our local university now, and she lives in a country which means that she can tell her father to mind his own business and conduct her life the way she sees fit.

As far as controlling my daughters. I don't. They are just great kids, and we had wonderful conversations nearly everyday while we walked.

Many Benzos tend to be long lasting, so getting very drunk and even not taking his medicine doesn't mean the beznos are out of his system

I knew a guy who blackout after taking booze and benzos and came to in jail. He apparently went to a best buy and literally just tried to walk out the door with a display laptop. He thought they were free at the time.

However Bickford said he is not a hateful or racist person and has apologized for his vicious attack.

'I am so sorry to that woman,' Bickford told the TV station. 'I have no idea who she is, but words can't explain how much that ... I've never hurt someone like that before.'

'I like helping people. And the fact that I did the complete opposite tears me down inside. I'm like, emotionally imploding.'

He told WTHR-TV in Indianapolis he has no memory of the incident and that a combination of drinking alcohol and not taking anti-anxiety medication caused him to snap.
