LINCOLN An anti-death penalty coalition called on Gov. Pete Ricketts on Wednesday to stop misleading Nebraskans about the chances of obtaining a key lethal injection drug.
Nebraska cannot legally obtain the drug, sodium thiopental, despite what the governor has been saying, say representatives of Nebraskans for Public Safety.
The group, in a press release, cited an authority on lethal injection, Eric Berger of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The administrations statements that it is working with the (U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency) to import sodium thiopental is a red herring, Berger said. Under federal law, it is very clear that this drug cannot legally enter the country, regardless of anything the DEA does or does not do.
