College faculty union rejects 'incendiary' contract offer from State System

Source: Penn Live

By Christian Alexandersen

The state universities' faculty union rejected an offer that would provide salary increases or a one-time cash payment, but also require its 5,500 members to pay more for health insurance.

The Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education announced Friday that it made an offer to the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties.

The one-year contract would have provided faculty with a salary increase of 2.5 percent or 5 percent or a one-time cash payment equivalent to 2.5 percent of their salary. In exchange for the proposed pay increase, the system has asked union members to take on a larger portion of health insurance costs.

The proposal called for faculty to contribute between $3 to $14 more every two-week pay period toward the cost of their health insurance premium, depending on their level of coverage.

"The system says it would save $9 million a year if the union agrees to the health care plan revisions."

By making union members pay $9 million a year more!!! But savings sounds so virtuous.
