Clinton woos black voters in rural S.C. as Sanders sticks to his normal crowd

ORANGEBURG, S.C. Democrats in South Carolina will cast their votes in the state's primary in just over 100 days and Hillary Clinton's campaign wants to ensure a strong performance among black voters when they do.
The presumptive Democratic nominee arrived at the historically black Claflin University Saturday afternoon for a town hall hosted by the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus. Despite coinciding with Claflin's homecoming celebration, Clinton's camp managed to draw a packed house to the event with several supporters gathering in an on-campus chapel temporarily set up as an overflow space.
Clinton talked of criminal justice reform, gun safety legislation, minimum wage and college affordability issues that hit close to home in Orangeburg, a town with a black population approaching 75 percent.
"We need to close the Charleston loophole which is,...............................
"We need to remove the immunity that gunmakers and sellers have," Clinton added to thunderous applause.
Malik Griffith, a sophomore at Claflin who attended the town hall as undecided voter, said ................
.......................
...............She propose refinancing "everybody's student debt" and shifting more students to income contingency programs ....................her college affordability includes a "special pot" of funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
"These are the places that graduate black professionals and we need more in Washington," she said
Clinton's leading opponent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, told South Carolinians Friday his economic and social justice agenda "will resonate with the African-American community" once he gets the word out. But as the former first lady took her message directly into a black community Saturday, Sanders stuck to addressing a nearly all-white gathering of Democratic women.

I have never seen ads where men come out and say, "Sure, I want a male president, but not just any man!" about Bernie Sanders. But with all of this, we kmow sexism is cured because someone's teenage daughters do not even think about gender.

From the article:
Battling for African-American support, Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders announced his South Carolina leadership team Saturday which includes three Democratic African-American state legislators.
State Reps. Terry Alexander of Florence, Wendell Gilliard of Charleston and Robert Williams of Darlington are among more than 25 committee members backing the U.S. senator from Vermonts bid for the Democratic nomination.
Sen. Sanders has the feel, the attitude of the common person, folks who are struggling day-by-day who are working everyday and still cannot pay their bills, ... do not have health insurance ... and cannot support their families, Alexander said, introducing Sanders who met briefly with media Saturday afternoon.
Sanders is the strongest candidate here for African Americans and he will bring about change, Alexander added.

So how about we tell the truth about what's really going on with African-American supporters and who Bernie is reaching out to, eh? Talk about ridiculous.

(31,234 posts)Hillary Clinton will announce on Tuesday that 50 current and former black mayors are backing her, including Michael Nutter of Philadelphia, Kasim Reed of Atlanta and Steve Benjamin, the mayor of Columbia, South Carolina and president of the African American Mayors Association.
The endorsements are the latest illustration of Clinton's strong support among African-Americans, who favor the former secretary of state over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders by over 50 points in many polls. And the endorsements are another sign that many elected officials in the Democratic Party are backing Clinton without waiting to see if Vice President Joe Biden opts to enter the race.
Clinton has made courting African-Americans activists a key part of her campaign, from attending the annual gala for the Congressional Black Caucus to meeting with key figures in the "Black Lives Matter" movement earlier this month. She is expected to roll out a comprehensive set of policies on criminal justice reform next week....

And anytime you want to snap back to reality, 538 keeps a tally of the latest endorsements. That tally so far is 406 for Hillary to 2 for BS.

(10,495 posts)Please! The money in our politics is what is behind Hillary's political endorsements, not her policies! It all comes down to the money, it's what has lead us to this point and made someone like Bernie necessary for the restoration of our Democracy. Her endorsements just help me to identify the others who are, or want be, bought off!

Suggesting that African Americans might want something a little better than a "debt re-financing" scheme to send their kids to college, well, that's just dwelling on economic issues. Who could possibly care about that, when Hillary is such a FIGHTER?
I hope the sarcasm tag isn't needed here.

When Anschutz started the Examiner in its daily newspaper format, he envisioned creating a conservative competitor to The Washington Post. According to Politico, "When it came to the editorial page, Anschutzs instructions were explicit he 'wanted nothing but conservative columns and conservative op-ed writers,' said one former employee." The Examiner's writers include Byron York, Michael Barone, and David Freddoso.[5]
The daily newspaper endorsed John McCain in the 2008 presidential election[14] and Adrian Fenty in the Democratic primary for mayor in 2010.[15] On December 14, 2011, it endorsed Mitt Romney for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, saying he was the only Republican who could beat Barack Obama in the general election,[16] releasing a series of articles critical of Obama.[17]

Bernie Sanderss flip-flop on the Democratic Party http://wapo.st/1M0iYLl
My personal opinion, which is based in intution and not on any hard, direct evidence , is that his candidacy is basically an info-mercial for his political views and not a serrious attempt to win the presidential election. But you can't run an honest "informative campaign" and actually be infomative. You end up like that guy, what's his name, some professor, who was running and then quit.
VanillaRhapsody
(21,115 posts)that state REQUIRES you to be one.....as I said before...just running on the Democratic Primary didn't make you a Democrat....because it did not require you to be one in their by-laws. HOWEVER, as I had been pointing out for MONTHS there are AT LEAST 5 states that I am aware of that REQUIRE you to be a Democrat to appear on their state ballots. So doing so...he put it in writing. Ipso-facto.....he cannot deny that.

(21,115 posts)A primary challenge occurs in U.S. politics when an incumbent elected official is challenged in an upcoming primary election by a member of his own political party. Such events, known informally as "being primaried," are noteworthy and not frequent in the United States, as tradition dictates that members of a political party support officeholders of the same party, both for party unity and to minimize the possibility of loss of the seat to an opposing party.
In addition, officeholders are frequently seen as de facto leaders of their political party, eligible to establish policy and administer affairs as they see fit. A primary challenge thus interferes with this "spoil of office," and is largely discouraged.
