Missile Test off Calif. Coast Causes Streaking Light, Confusion
Source: NBC
A missile test was the cause of a mysterious light that appeared in the night sky over California and parts of the West Saturday, prompting calls to officials and speculation on social media, the military said.
The missile was not armed, a spokesperson for the U.S. Navy said. It was launched from a submarine.

Many viewers called in to NBC San Diego, NBC Southern California and NBC Bay Area reporting a green and blue colored streak of bright light through the sky, reported as far south as Mexico and as far north as the Bay Area. Some viewers even reported seeing it in Nevada, Colorado and Arizona.
It was really slow and then exploded really gray and there was some blue lights it just looked really weird, Sokhom Thoeun who was walking on a San Diego beach with his family told NBC7.
I'm like it's not a firework, it's not a falling star, it's not the moon...I don't know what it was...but it was the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life, witness Jessica Blecker said.

A mysterious bright light that streaked over the nighttime sky in California was a huge mystery for a few hours last night. The light was so bright that it could be seen in parts of Nevada and Arizona. Some reported that it faded from bright red to white or blue, some thought it was a meteor, and others thought it was a nuclear bomb. The U.S. Navy later announced that this was part of a missile test, but not everyone is believing the explanation.

A missile test off the California coast has sparked frenzy on social media, with #UFO, #comet and #navy trending, as confused residents uploaded videos and pictures of a bright light illuminating the night skies.
"There's a UFO in Los Angeles. I'm so excited. I'm so ready," tweeted Shane Dawson, well known for his YouTube videos.
"Los Angeles UFO? It was not a comet. My son saw the Unidentified Flying Object in Hollywood," tweeted @AnnieJacobsen.
The San Diego Union-Tribune said the streaking light was visible as far away as Nevada and Arizona and authorities were reportedly flooded with calls.

By Peter Holley November 8 at 10:35 AM
A mysterious light that rocketed across the Southern California sky on Saturday night, sparking fears of nuclear war, an incoming meteor and an alien invasion, was actually an unarmed missile test-fired by a Navy submarine.
<snip>
The lack of information about the streaking light fired up social media and led countless people to turn their smartphones toward the sky. On Twitter, users created hashtags such as #ufo and #comet and #ufo as they joked about the light, speculated about its origin and accused the government of a cover-up. In addition to posting images and video of the object online, witnesses flooded local law enforcement agencies with phone calls, according to the Associated Press.
At first, it looked like a gold shooting star, Matt McKee, who witnessed the light, told CNN. It went from gold and small, burning for a few minutes and turned into this blue spot light. Like at an event held at night not like shooting out at us, but a white bright light, he said.
