7-year-old girl killed at MI soccer practice after paranoid man with concealed carry license opens fire

7-year-old girl died at soccer practice Thursday night and a family friend who had been experiencing paranoia is accused of shooting her in the head before taking his own life.
Emma Nowling and her mother, Sharon Watson, were shot after the little girls soccer practice session at the Taylor Sportsplex in Michigan. Watson is listed in serious but stable condition, while Nowling died Thursday night after suffering head injuries, MLive.com reports. Authorities describe the suspect, Timothy Nelson Obeshaw, as a family friend who had a concealed carry permit and a legally-purchased gun.
Police say a 9 mm pistol recovered from the shooting scene was registered to Obeshaw.
The man had recently been experiencing paranoia, thought someone was out to get him and believed someone was trying to control him through mind control, Taylor police Chief Mary Sclabassi told MLive.

Police confirmed Obeshaw also had a valid concealed pistol license.

"Obviously if the persons close to this individual (Obeshaw) had perhaps taken the steps to make sure that he got the help he needed, he may not have been in the position to obtain the firearms that he had yesterday," she said. "It is unfortunate."

So, the police chief is saying that when people suspect someone has mental health problems, they can go to the police who will immediately remove all their guns?

I want to see a list of all the congresscritters who have taken money from the NRA, how much they've taken and then I want it published for everyone to see so that those of us in this country who are sane can shame them into vowing to not take their blood money. It just takes the majority of us sane ones to put the pressure on. I want to see a time (soon) when someone running for office refuses to take NRA money and makes it public loud and clear.

(19,247 posts)The bill was proposed by several Democrats and responds to a deadly rampage in May near the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Relatives of the victims and other supporters of the bill said the parents of 22-year-old Elliot Rodger were thwarted in their attempts to seek help for their troubled son before the rampage.
It sounds like a reasonable law, as it has provisions to punish those who make false claims about gun owners (thus preventing misuse of the law), and gives the person accused of mental instability the chance to argue their sanity before a judge. I don't see any evidence that MI has such a law, though

(33,982 posts)This is why the general prohibition on registration in the 1986 GOPA is a problem. Even if he'd been adjudicated incompetent, the police can only stop by and say 'hey, give us your guns'. They can't say 'Hey, give us this list of guns you have registered to you, and we're not leaving till you do'.

You have to give credit to the fear-mongers of the world for using this escalating paranoia to make profits. I'm not saying just the NRA, but also the USA - selling weapons around the world.

(28,079 posts)that they think they need one. Very few people have a valid reason to carry on gun on their person everywhere they go.
Part of the permit process should be requiring the applicant to take the MMPI and have a least one session with a psychiatrist to go over the results and discuss why they think they need a gun.

There is not a single legitimate reason to be in the GOP unless you are rich and greedy, and then we can argue if that is a legitimate reason.
So are they mentally ill?
Maybe not all of them, but certainly they are brainwashed at a minimum.
I know what they say about us, I argue with them daily.
Now if you are like a close friend of mine who is a politician and has to work with righty, who would tell me something similar to what you are saying, then fine, but he has a reason he as to appease them.

ManiacJoe
(10,136 posts)is the same logic as calling all LWers "mentally ill".
If you want to label that logic as "good", we will have to agree to disagree.
If you want to use the qualifier "some", as in "some RWers", then you and I agree. I will even given you "most RWers".
randys1
(16,286 posts)Sounds like we dont disagree, but you are upset that someone used the word "all".
And while I guess you are right we shouldn't ever use that word in this context, it really isnt the most important point, now is it.
But, again, you remind me of my politician friend (complement, by the way) and we need cooler heads among us, sounds like you are one of those.
So, thanks for the conversation and peace out.

I don't think everyone who feels that the left has gotten "anti-Christian" is wrong.
I think it's okay to want prayer in school, or at least a moment of silence.
I think it's okay to homeschool, and I don't blame parents for wanting to get their children out of public schools, more than they want to fix them.
There are statistics that show that faith-based charities are more trusted than government programs in a lot of cases. So I understand that some people think that government programs aren't as effective as they could be.
People have many reasons for leaning right. I don't agree, but I prefer not to hate or insult them.

On edit, I read yesterday that pot can trigger it. So someone that had it as a young adult (me) and lived life with out having a problem coping with it (forgot all about it) and then starts using pot. BAM it is all back all of a sudden. Kind of like getting hit in the head with a 2x4.

(8,175 posts)Who is going to force the mentally ill to get the help they need? Look at the Aurora shooter. He went to a counselor and still did what he did. He chose not to get the help that was available. Who is going to police the mentally ill?
Are we all going to be required to turn in our friends and neighbors (of course we all should try to get our family members help if they need it, but that's not always even possible). But even helping a mentally ill person to see someone does not mean they get put on a list that prevents them from buying a gun.
There are no laws strong enough right now to prevent the mentally ill and agressive abusive stalkers from buying a gun, unless you are found legally insane and committed to an institution, or a judge determines you to be a danger. And as long as you can still buy guns without a back ground check, anywhere, as long as guns are cheap and easily available to anyone who really wants one, this is not going to end.
This is the fault of our politicians who are fighting not to do anything about it. And the NRA and gun lobbyists and manufacturers. And the fact that money buys politicians. Get the damn money out of politics! Go Bernie!

Gina Damron and By Ann Zaniewski, Detroit Free Press Education Writer 4:44 p.m. EST December 5, 2015
Emma Watson Nowling took a quick break from soccer practice Thursday night to greet a man walking by the sidelines. "Little Emma went up and gave the guy a hug," Emma's soccer coach, Mario Scicluna, said.
Later that night, that man, Timothy Nelson Obeshaw, shot 7-year-old Emma and her mother, 37-year-old Sharon Elizabeth Watson, in the parking lot of the Taylor Sportsplex before turning his 9mm pistol on himself, according to Taylor police. Authorities described Obeshaw as a family friend.
Emma died from her injuries. Watson is in serious condition at a local hospital, police said.
Police said family members described the 57-year-old Obeshaw who had lived with Watson and her boyfriend at their home in Belleville before recently moving to a home in Taylor as mentally unstable. A motive, though, remains unclear, according to police.
