that this is reprehensible and Trump is a fascist bigot...how exactly would this even work?

The only possible way to do this would be out and out racial profiling, and even that would be wildly ineffective. If a Muslim wanted to come into the USA to commit an act of terror, how would this stop them? If they don't claim to be Muslim how exactly does Trump think we can identify Muslims vs non-Muslims? If they want to harm us, they can dress in everyday casual clothes and claim to be anything other than Muslim and we wouldn't have a clue one way or the other. Even clothing isn't a sure-fire identifier (for example, Sikhs have been confused for Muslims plenty of times over the years).

Naturally we could just assume everyone with darker skin must obviously be a Muslim (which would turn away any number of African Catholics or Christians from many Mediterranean countries...among others). Or we could just assume everyone from the Middle East is a Muslim (which would come as quite a surprise to many of the Jews and Christians in the region). Further what happens if a terrorist comes from Indonesia (which has a gigantic population of Muslims)? They don't look Middle Eastern and they don't have Middle Eastern names. Do we stop all of them too just to be safe? Further, there are plenty of white Muslims in Europe. If one of them wants to commit an act of terror, how do we stop them from coming in if they don't claim to be Muslim?

Racial profiling wouldn't work, identification by type of name wouldn't work, clothing style wouldn't work, and region of origin wouldn't work. Maybe he could shut the borders completely (a wall with heavy guard for its entire length would be required on all land borders) , halt all immigration via air and sea, wipe out all foreign tourism, and shut down H1Bs and foreign exchange programs. That might do it. It would cost a fortune, ruin untold numbers of businesses, cause a massive worker shortage, and ruin the soul of the country but that's beside the point.

I can't believe I've spent this much time even thinking about it, but the suggestion is just so preposterous and totally unworkable.
