The Latest: Tribe says armed activists 'desecrating' land
Associated Press

BURNS, Ore. (AP) — The latest on an armed group that took over federal buildings at an Oregon wildlife refuge (all times local):

9:25 a.m.

The leader of an Oregon Indian tribe whose ancestral property is being occupied by a small, armed group opposed to federal land policy says the activists aren't welcome and need to leave.

Burns Paiute Tribal Chair Charlotte Rodrique told reporters Wednesday that the tribe is concerned about damage to cultural artifacts. She says the group is "desecrating one of our sacred sites."

. . .

Rodrique said the Paiute people spent winters in the area before settlers, ranchers and trappers arrived.

say that the colonial aggression has gone on long enough and they claim their sovereign right to the house because the federal government that took it from them was unlawful.

And follow that up with, "I am sure the Bundys understand."

The people whose resistance to the laws and the refuge caused all of this and who gave the Bundys an excuse to have an excursion and play militia.

Another thread here has an article that gives a long term perspective on the Hammond's history of abuse of the refuges and BLM land and whey they were finally charged and convicted to prison time.

I don't mind handing the Bundy land back to the original owners but that would be a different tribe.

ETA - couldn't find the DU post but here is the article they referenced. Interesting read, main part written years ago: http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/01/05/showdown-in-the-malheur-marshes-the-origins-of-the-armed-occupation-in-burns-oregon/

Oregon native tribe uncomfortable with armed standoff over land rights
Reuters
By Jonathan Allen

BURNS, Ore. (Reuters) - When armed men first took over a wildlife refuge in Oregon this weekend, the leader of the area’s Native American tribal council could relate to their land-right dispute but disagreed with their gun-toting approach.

“I just think they’re a bunch of glory hounds,” Charlotte Rodrique, the chairwoman of the federally recognized Burns Paiute Tribe, said in an interview on Tuesday at the tribal reservation’s meeting house. ‘Look at us, look at what we’re doing.’ I don’t give much credence to their cause.”

The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and the small town of Burns have been thrust into the spotlight by the takeover, which began on Saturday and marked the latest protest over federal management of millions of acres (hectares) of land in the West.

The armed militia’s standoff with the U.S. government over ranchers’ land rights has bewildered the leaders of the tribe. Although the Paiute have their own disputes over land and water with U.S. government agencies, they prefer a less adversarial approach.

Manifest Destiny and the Doctrine of Discovery 2016 style with a new twist by these hypocrites.

The Ingenious people are really tired of this stuff-----------------go back to your own country, you have done nothing except take.....................

The Osage said it perfectly in there Constitution:

"We the Wah-zha-zhe, known as the Osage People..........................calling upon fundamental values that we hold sacred:
Justice, Fairness, Compassion, Respect for the Protection of Child, Elder, All Fellow Beings, and Self......................."

because if anyone wants to know some history of what Indigenous people are, they never struck the children, before they were shipped off to the boarding schools back east, never, because when you strike a child they become just like you and they pass it down to the next child---------------------

and these hypocrites are just that, hypocrites, they violate the sacred grounds, to show what they have done since the founding of this land and all they have done, is that they did it for greed just like there fore fathers-----------------------------leave

What I think they are really afraid of is "how many of these nuts are here in the USA and what kind of violence is going to result from this mess?"

Most are isolated and unknown and more than likely armed. And they are more than likely in every state in the USA.

Bundy Militia Musters Again Over Paiute Land
Steve Russell
1/3/16

Some of the same armed “militia” involved in the Cliven Bundy affair in Nevada have occupied federal land in Oregon formerly reserved for the Northern Paiute. Ironically, the “legal” basis for starting a fight with the federal government is that sovereignty “really” belongs to Oregon rather than the Paiutes, who have seen their federal trust land shrink from over one and a half million acres to a tiny remnant of 760 acres in Burns, Oregon, where this current armed standoff began.

Cliven Bundy is a Nevada rancher who engaged in an armed standoff with the federal government in 2014 when some of his cattle were seized over 20 years of unpaid grazing fees. “Militia members” and “patriots” from all the western states and phototropic politicians from as far away as Arizona joined Bundy. Video at the time showed “militiamen” taking aim at federal officers, and the authorities decided a bloodbath over grazing fees was not sensible. When the federal agents stood down, the militias declared a major victory.

This Saturday, January 2, the war over federal authority continued when an unknown number of militia members seized a building in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and Ammon Bundy—Cliven Bundy’s son—released a video urging like thinking people to arm themselves and come to Oregon, declaring, “We’re going to be staying for several years.”

The “militiamen” claimed the occupation of the empty building was accomplished by 150 armed men. The armed occupation of Malheur Wildlife Refuge grew out of demonstrations over the impending deadline for Steven Hammond, 46, and his father Dwight Hammond, Jr., 73, to report to federal custody to begin serving five years in prison each for arson on public lands.
