Tonya Couch allegedly withdrew $30K before Mexico trip

'Affluenza' teen's mother arraigned Friday

UPDATED 9:46 AM EST Jan 09, 2016

By Faith Karimi and Catherine E. Shoichet CNN

(CNN) —Before Tonya Couch and her son fled to Mexico, she withdrew $30,000 from her account and told her husband he'll not see them again, an arrest affidavit stated.

Authorities accuse Couch of helping her son, Ethan, the so-called affluenza teen, leave the country to avoid a probation hearing that may have led to jail time for him.

Tonya Couch faces a charge of hindering the apprehension of a felon, and was arraigned Friday in Fort Worth. She did not enter a formal plea.

She arrived in Texas on Thursday after a Los Angeles judge approved her extradition over a week after Mexican authorities detained mother and son in a Pacific resort town.

Before going on the run,
open a bank account in, and transfer her millions to
a country with no extradition treaty with the United States.

These countries currently have no extradition treaty with the United States:

She has no right protecting her son from the repercussions of driving drunk and killing people.

Money does not mean you get away with everything. Or at least it shouldn't.

Some snot-nosed rich kid and his mother hide out in Mexico but get caught. So what? Kid goes to jail, case closed.

12. "Affluenza". That's the fascination. Kid should have gone to jail when he killed

4 people and injured a dozen or so others in a terrible drunk driving crash.

The judge let him off with only probation because of "affluenza", a word coined by the defense attorney.

Dumbass couldn't follow the rules of probation and rather than face the music he fled to Mexico with mommy in the most amateurish way possible.

He's not just any snot-nosed rich kid. He is the current poster child for the benefits of racial and class privilege.

It's a train wreck and many people are waiting for the sweet feeling of schadenfreude when (if?) his victims and their families get justice.

That's the short version.

13. Well, $30,000 wouldn't last them long--especially at the rate that kid spent money

on booze and strippers.

Obviously the mother has no clear sense of what things cost if she thought they would be fine with $30,000 and no further source of income after cutting off all ties with her husband.
