The mother of a Texas teen who was derided for his affluenza defence in a fatal drunk driving crash was released from a county jail on Tuesday and placed under home confinement on an electronic monitor, a sheriff said.
Tonya Couch, 48, is charged with helping her son Ethan flee to Mexico, likely in violation of a probation deal that allowed him to avoid prison for the crash that killed four people. He is being held in Mexico while fighting extradition to the United States.
Couch posted a bond on Monday after a judge reduced her bail to $75,000 from $1 million on the third-degree felony charge, which calls for up to 10 years in prison. Her lawyers had argued that the original amount was excessively high.
Judge Wayne Salvant on Monday also ordered Couch to stay with another of her sons, report weekly to authorities and have an electronic monitor.

(5,902 posts)I lived in Mississippi for several years. If you belong, you, your family, and close friends can practically live above the law - rather like many places in the Third World.
Some semblance of control had been achieved over these people in the 70s, 80s, and 90s - but it's really coming back now.

Why would you think she could ever do something that horrible? She's a fine woman, and believes in the law. Besides....she's not even guilty of any crime. Not sure why we're here wasting time with these charges your honor."
We have such a great judicial system. I'm surprised they didn't apologize to her when she made bail. How Dare they inconvenience her like that.

(764 posts)Wont run because of the hate. Right now the US populations view of this lady is probably pretty hate filled for what she did and also because she does belong to the old boys network so gets away with more. However if she runs everyone is going to have a powerful hate towards Tonya and an individual can only deflect so much hate until they cant anymore. She will try and lay low now until sons issue in Mexico gets figured out so she is not running.

(3,194 posts)Lots of people hate George Zimmerman, but that doesn't stop him from continuing his criminal like ways. All she cares about is getting away with her crime, just like her kid was able to. She'll live with any hate directed her way, she couldn't care less.

(764 posts)Some people may let their ego say peer pressure does not matter but its just because they have not looked inside deep enough. A lot of what motivates us has to do with how we think it will look to others. Tonya appears to be quite codependent, looks like she married for money and then put her life on hold to try and keep her son out of jail. No Tonya cares very much how she thinks she looks to others and there is no way she has the balls to deflect the hate and run on her own, remember everything she has ever done was about somebody else.
So how is George doing dealing with the hate? How many times he been in jail SINCE the original murder? I contend George is not very good at deflecting the hate. Saw him on the news last year his life is imploding with "most hated man" written all over his face.
She does not have reason to run nope she will stay hope and try and help her son from behind the scenes.
