Dad thought son was intruder, kills him
Source: USA Today
CINCINNATI A father mistook his 14-year-old son for an intruder Tuesday and shot him in the neck, killing him, according to Cincinnati police.
The father had dropped off Georta Mack at a school bus stop, but the teen returned to his East Price Hill neighborhood home before 6:30 a.m. ET, police said.
Georta hid in the basement after coming back home and startled his father, who had retrieved a handgun. Georta's dad opened the basement door and fired his weapon, police said.
The father called 911, and the teen was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center but died about 90 minutes later. Cincinnati Police Lt. Steve Saunders said officers were interviewing the father, whose name was not released, and he has been cooperative.-

(8,175 posts)First story:
She lived with her roommate Katie. Katie was a tough little gal and had a gun. One night they both heard a noise and came out into a darkened hallway in the house. Katie with her gun. She almost shot my Mom before she realized who it was.
Second story:
My Mom lost her key or left it home. She had to break in a window to get in her house. A cop saw her and came to stop a break in. He said "how do I know you live here?". She said "you try climbing in that window". He got near the window and was greeted by a large black growling dog. He said "Ok" and left her to her business of climbing in the window.
Those two stories combined taught me a life lesson.
Dogs are safer than guns for protection.
In this sad story, the kid would not have been attacked by his own dog, and if the father had not had a gun, he wouldn't be dead. Pretty simple when you think about it.

Here are the rules according to a gun enthusaiast--
http://thefederalist.com/2015/02/24/14-things-everyone-should-understand-about-guns/
These are rules literally every person should understand, because you never know when you might be in a situation that requires you to handle a firearm. To seasoned gun owners, these basic gun safety rules are gospel. If faithfully followed, they will prevent the likelihood of you ever shooting someone who did not pose an immediate and mortal threat to an innocent person.
1. Treat all guns as though they are loaded.
2. Never point the muzzle at anything you dont intend to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and youre prepared to fire.
4. Always confirm your target, as well as whats in front, behind, and around it.

Blindly shooting into a dark basement like some fucking moron more than a little bit violates that commandment. And from my Dad, those most certainly were commandments. Made such an impression on me, I can still here his voice to this day. The perp should have his firearm privileges revoked for life since he obviously can't be trusted to handle them safely.

(8,646 posts)is that a lot of people with guns are scared, fallible human beings. Many are not going to remember every.single.safety.tip.ever.taught when scared out of their minds when they hear someone prowling in their house. And that is exactly why guns should not be so goddamn common. It takes real training to operate guns safely most of the time, never mind all of the time. I will never forget that episode of preppers where the dad went on and on about gun safety to his kid. On and on and on. Showing off for the camera I guess. Then, shocking I know, he shot off his thumb. As he was being airlifted away his kid says, "Dad, you aren't supposed to put any part of your hand in front of the barrel you know. Ever. You always said." The point being...humans are human.
The stories I have from our town's facebook 'share' page of drunk out of town cousins or friends walking home alone from the local pub into the neighbor's house by mistake instead of the place they are visiting and crashing on the sofa of the wrong house...and being ushered out of the house none too gently by a screaming wife and angry husband. Many houses around here look the same (the first month I moved into my new townhouse, i pulled into the wrong driveway in the dark, LOL). Some drunk guy from down the street got lost and tried to get into a bunch of people's houses around here...a bunch of us called the cops who looked at his ID and escorted him to his actual home about 20 doors down. Imagine if we lived in the US with guns everywhere...a lot of drunk people would now be dead because...they got drunk and were dumb. Like no one ever did dumb shit before.
I just think everyone would be safer if there were just fewer guns. Period.

why does everyone with a gun think they are trained to handle situations like dealing with intruders. Not all intruders need to be shot. It might even just be a raccoon! Not every robber is armed and dangerous, and not every theft deserves a penalty of death.
If you have a gun and aim it at someone, you better mean to kill them...otherwise, don't aim it at them...or don't have a gun. Why do so many think it's OK to kill another human being?

(27,247 posts)First, the father supposedly drives his son to a school bus stop, well before 6:30 a.m. But that house looks like it is in a highly urbanized area-- just how far away is the school? And just how long does it take to go to his school? And the kid comes back before 6:30 a.m. and hides in the basement? If the kid and father got along well, why would the kid feel he needed to hide from his father? And the father just shoots point blank into the basement? I am really scratching my head over this one.

(1,098 posts)1) Treat each and every firearm as if it were loaded and ready to fire
2) Never point the firearm at anything you're not willing to shoot
3) Always identify your target and be aware of what is behind it*
4) Keep your finger off the trigger until you are 100% ready to shoot
*this is in case the bullet penetrates through the target and hits someone or something behind
There are a few comments that seem to put equal blame on the father (for shooting) and the son (for hiding), but given these four basic rules, I would say 100% of the blame is on the father. He didn't identify the target at which he was shooting.
