Macri eliminates National Reproductive Health Program in Argentina.

Source: InfoNews

Argentine President Mauricio Macri signed new decree eliminating the National Sexual Health and Responsible Parenthood Program, which implemented policies protecting women's reproductive rights and extended reproductive health coverage and education to the poor.

The new decree, 114/2016, was published on January 12 in the Official Gazette and withdraws the program's mandate. Established by congressional passage in 2002, the bill was achieved after years of struggle on the part of organizations defending the rights of women and sexual minorities.

Speaking to Página/12 today, Secretary of Gender for the CTA labor federation (the nation's second largest) and member of the Advisory Board of the Program, Estela Díaz, said that this new decree "endangers the continuity of the supply of essentials such as contraception, as well the training programs for the formation of health teams in poor communities."

Among the objectives of the program was to achieve universal sexual and reproductive health, reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality, prevent unwanted pregnancies, promote sexual health of adolescents, guarantee access to information and services related to sexual health, and educate young people as to responsible procreation.

The Buenos Aires news daily Pagina/12 had reported that in the days before the appearance of the decree, program staff had been ordered by the new authorities at the Ministry of Health, headed by Minister Jorge Lemus, to suspend all activities.

Another decree by tin-pot Macri, who's ruling by decree until March 1 (at least).

This one was at the top of the Opus Dei's wish list. The Macri official who many believe is responsible for this new policy, Dr. Abel Albino, thought of the reproductive health program as "assisted fornication." http://www.democraticunderground.com/110845136

I like President Obama, and voted for him twice. But he coddles waaaaaaaay too much.

He coddles Wall Street, by appointing an Attorney General who basically spent 7 years pretending 2008 didn't happen.

He coddles the international cartels, by trying to foist this monstrosity the TPP on the public - none of whom are buying it.

And by the same token he coddles criminal neocons by largely continuing their foreign policy (with some notable exceptions, of course).

Argentina is a small, but good, example of this. When Néstor and Cristina Kirchner were in office (their policies were similar to Bernie's - and Argentina's economy doubled in the 12 years they were in office), Obama was even colder to them than Bush - despite the fact that Néstor Kirchner almost singlehandedly defeated Bush's Free Trade of the Americas nonsense by rallying other leaders in the region against it.

Obama, for instance, refused to intervene in the ongoing vulture fund extortion lawsuit - by which they're using (read:bribing) a Wall Street judge to hold the country's bondholders hostage until Paul Singer (the Cayman Islands TARP baby who hates Obama more than anyone!) gets his 1,600% payoff.

It wasn't even about the money (Singer already collected his CDS default insurance): it was designed to starve Argentina of international credit. Few will buy Argentine bonds - which have paid religiously since 2005 and at a whopping 9% - when they know Singer's judge can illegally impound their payments at a moment's notice.

But now that this tin-pot racist Macri is in office, Obama plans to visit Argentina this March - as close to an endorsement as he can make it, considering he never did in 7 years. From a Rapepublican, who cares; but coming from a man like Obama, who fought racism and abuse of power all his life, to endorse a man who embodies exactly that, is a true disappointment.

In El Salvador, for example, women are thrown in jail for miscarriages and stillbirths (!). http://www.democraticunderground.com/110840049

It looks like Macri wants to take Argentina - one of the most progressive countries in the region - down the same path. His Opus Dei friends certainly do.

yes, I will catch hell about liberal christians, yada yada, but religions are patriarchal. Diderot summed it up nicely- Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest.

patriarchal, woman-hating institutions to hate and fear women, some women succumb to self-loathing, and go along with the propaganda.

To many in the U.S., it's just something out of a Dan Brown novel.

But to people from majority-Catholic countries - especially in Latin America - the alliance of the Opus Dei with right-wing (actually, fascist) business interests and like-mided government officials has been a difficult issue for decades.

An unholy trinity, if you will.

It was the Opus Dei, famously, who kept Franco in power in Spain, and later many of Latin America's larcenous dictators. They were also behind the spectacular Banco Ambrosiano failure in 1981, which has derailed Italy's economy ever since (many believe they were also behind the poisoning of Pope John Paul I, who was about to put an end to the Vatican Bank's use as a laundry for the Opus Dei and Ambrosiano).

These days, of course, they prefer to exert their influence through business executives - particularly banking and medicine. Hence freaks like this Dr. Abel Albino, who almost certainly prepared this decree for Señor Macri.

I'm hoping this fascist attempt at a dictatorship in Argentina will fail far, far more swiftly than the last one.

Very informative thread, however, good for those of us still needing to learn a lot about Argentina. Thank you, forest444.

If hard proof were to ever surface that, for instance, Macri had those three murderers freed from federal prison as a reward for slandering Aníbal Fernández (María Vidal's Kirchnerist opponent for the key post of Governor of Buenos Aires), then impeachment could be in the cards.

Short of something that explosive surfacing though, impeachment seems very unlikely for now. Doing so requires a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress in Argentina; and while Macri's PRO only has 16% of all House seats and 5% in the Senate, his reluctant allies, the centrist UCR, will only allow impeachment if Macri is caught red-handed.

I can tell you that most of the swing voters who opted for him, and weren't sure either way, would definitely vote against them if the election were held today. Clarín can cover for Macri all it wants; but even for people who don't care about any of these other abuses, the simple fact remains that pocketbooks don't lie.

They never do that except in the case of Saudi Arabia, the other Gulf Monarchies and latin American dictators like Pinochet. I am so shocked both democrats and republicans support these assholes.
