Highway patrol identifies police officer shot and killed in Danville, Ohio

DANVILLE, Ohio -- A police officer from Danville, Ohio, was shot and killed Sunday night, according to
Ohio State Highway Patrol. The suspected gunman was arrested early Monday morning in connection
to the officer's death.

Officials in Knox County have identified the Danville police officer killed in the line of duty as Thomas
Cottrell, WCPO news partner WHIO reported Monday. Cottrell was found shot outside the Danville
Municipal Building.

The caller said her ex-boyfriend, Herschel Ray Jones, had left with weapons and was looking to kill an officer,
WHIO reports. Dispatch personnel attempted to make contact with the Danville officer, but were unsuccessful.
Deputies from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office searched the village.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m. this morning, Jones III was observed running from a residence on E. Washington Street.
After a short foot chase, Jones III was taken into custody by officers in the area of the Danville Park.

Just this morning on MSNBC there was a guy who was showing the number of cops killed on duty excluding accidents and also showing the number of police interactions with citizens yearly. His research showed over 99% of cops have NEVER had any accusations of misconduct or complaints filed.

7. I'm familiar with it. Atlanta had a similar scandal; "Red dog squad" i think.

But some of those DID go to jail. And in Macon ga several cops have been jailed in recent years; here's one from a few months back:

But again, the facts presented this morning still stand. Whether or not any discipline occurs, there would still be a record of a complaint. And over 99% of active cops in the country do NOT have any spots on their record. And nearly 100 have been killed by others.
On the other hand, You do have some reason to be pissed off. The recent case in Minn. of the cop beating his K-9 partner pisses me off. He pleads guilty and they REASSIGN him to a job without the dog!! Do they really think he'll treat people BETTER than the way he treated his dog? And the dog is considered an officer, if we hit the dog we would be charged with assault on an officer. I hope the locals up there push for this guy to be fired.

Sorry. There needs to be a hard, hard, crackdown on corrupt police, especially racists who victimize minorities, and the politicians and bureaucrats who enable them, but to generalize about all members of a group based on the actions of some in that group is just stupid and not a very good human trait.

No argument from me that there are a lot of bad cops and maybe even entire departments that are corrupt. Because of the power police have over the citizenry in our everyday lives, we should not tolerate racist or corrupt police at all. The public needs to demand a supreme effort to stamp out bad cops. But if we deny there are good cops and stamp out the good cops along with the bad we will be in a world of hurt.

But whole departments that are set up to do racial profiling and to target blacks and other POC and poor (homeless); and the policies of shoot first ask questions later are always protected by grand juries and the departments.

Of course not all cops are bad, but many good ones are working in bad environments. The system needs an overhaul.

I think everything you said happens. But be careful. Many blacks and other POCs and poor live in crime ridden areas. Police sometimes concentrate on those areas(target those areas) to better protect the citizens of those areas. This can appear to be targeting the poor and POC when it is actually the area that is targeted because of a high crime rate.

In my mind, the poor and POCs living in crime ridden areas deserve enhanced police protection so they can live safer lives. However, much must be done to ensure that their rights are respected by the police.

I agree the system needs to be overhauled to weed out the bad apples and the bad environments.

This was more or less a private issue since being that they shared a gf. Know this area of Ohio well and she notified the department about what her ex was going to do. Jealousy rears its ugly head and someone pays the price for stupidity. R.I.P. Officer Cottrell.

The assassin mentality of today's cops along with the dumbing down of Americans via our media and poor education system are things that don't nourish trust. Also, the culture's glorification of the gun is a recipe for failure. The weakest minded of us can do rash things, and they do.
