Fukushima disaster: Tepco admits late meltdown announcement
Source: BBC
The operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant hit by a tsunami in 2011 has admitted that it should have announced sooner that there was a nuclear meltdown at the site.
The Tokyo Electric Power Company denied the meltdown for two months.
The company now says the public declaration should have been done within days of the disaster.
Experts have long said the melting began within hours of the reactor being struck by the tsunami.

(8,267 posts)the relentless snarks levied at you for posting regular updates regarding Fukushima, and noting the seriousness of the disaster.
Seems all those resentful and derisive naysayers have faded into the woodwork.
Anywho, I, for one, have appreciated your activism with regards to Fukushima. So, thank you for this update.

(33,982 posts)Most of the snark was dead accurate, in response to the hyperbole of the time. Cores didn't escape the containment.

(13,685 posts)You should tell TEPCO, because they have admitted they don't know where the cores are.
The rest of us know where the cores are. Pieces of the cores have gone global. You probably have some core material in you.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)TEPCO has supplied data that has been used independently to verify the location of the cores and how far they burned into the containment floor.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)The cores are not contained. TEPCO admits as much. I guess your wishful thinking leads you to deny these simple facts?
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)The cores are inside the containments of units 1-3.
The containments are LEAKING contaminated water, which is not the same as saying the cores burned their way through the floorboards.
FBaggins
(26,748 posts)Of course not.
Instead... there will be links to total releases in nanograms to pounds (depending on the element) when thousands of tons of fuel were in the reactors/pools.
There's no evidence for 99.9999+% of the fuel ever leaving containment.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)That radioactive materials from the cores are being found in the groundwater.
Since it is a 'no mans land' near what's left of the containment structures and even robots melt when close, TEPCO has not been able to ascertain just where the cores are. But they do know, little by little, it is running off into the pacific. Indeed, since the explosions, they have found parts of the cores in California. And Europe.

(26,748 posts)There's a big difference between "radioactive materials" (i.e., volatile elements) and the actual cores. You know... tons of uranium?
Since it is a 'no mans land' near what's left of the containment structures and even robots melt when close,
Still on with that BS "melting robots" nonsense? Even after multiple robots have actually entered the primary containments themselves? Nothing melted so far.
TEPCO has not been able to ascertain just where the cores are.
Yeah? And I don't know how tall you are. But I can be certain of a definite range. It would be insanity to claim that just because I can't identify it to the inch, that 9'7" is possible.
But they do know, little by little, it is running off into the pacific.
How much is "little by little" eh? A figure in pounds per year will suffice.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Everyone knows the explosions and intense fires launched uranium particles and byproducts of the reactors around the world.
Just saw a NOVA report on robots and they showed a part about robots at Fukushima and the robot tech said "Robots failed".
Are you sure you're not a plant here to make nukes look bad? Because you sure do make nuke supporters look silly.
FBaggins
(26,748 posts)But that doesn't mean that it isn't hilarious.
Everyone knows the explosions and intense fires launched uranium particles and byproducts of the reactors around the world.
Everyone knows that? How odd. I guess the aliens erased any mention of uranium releases from the internet?
Just saw a NOVA report on robots and they showed a part about robots at Fukushima and the robot tech said "Robots failed".
Yeah... one of them got stuck between two adjoining grates... but continued to operate well past it's designed lifetime until the cord was cut. No news of any of them "melting"... and if you actually watched a recent news broadcast regarding robots and Fukushima... you would have seen lots of footage from non-melted robots... from inside containment.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Cameras on wheels is all they were, they showed the cores to be missing.
Radiation is so bad around the buildings humans can't get close. So they sent in these cameras on wheels 'robots' and the robots got radiated beyond repair or re-use. Essentially, they melted.
As for the cores, you do know they have found a 7 fold increase of cesium in California since Fukushima blew sky high. And they know it's from Fukushima. So it's come all the way across the pacific. It wasn't a minute amount that escaped containment. Making any claim that it wasn't much is hilarious, yet here you are making such hilarious claims.
You do make nukers look anti-science. You may want to quit doing that?

My advice, trust the science, not the loonies at ENEnews.com, or those who quote them here.

They are just venting a little steam.,
because I know "Science", and you are just a stupid Henny Penny worrying about nothing.
These Nuclear Plants are PERFECTLY SAFE, because they have redundant back up systems. They are so safe, we can build them in known Tsunami areas and on known earth quake faults.
Did I mention that I know Science, and you are stupid?
Where have they all gone.

As long as we use Nuke Plants,
Fukushima and worse WILL happen again,
and again....and again.
Man has never built a fail safe machine.
