Ethel Kennedy leads farm workers' protest near home of Wendy's billionaire chairman

Source: Fox News Latino

Hundreds of protesters, many farm workers, led by Ethel Kennedy, demonstrated near the home of Wendy's fast food chain chairman Nelson Peltz in hopes of convincing the company to pay a penny-per-pound fee for its tomatoes to supplement some farm workers' wages.

The Palm Beach Post reports the Immokalee Coalition of Farmworker march near the billionaire's Palm Beach, FL, home was peaceful Saturday. A federal judge had ruled the coalition could use loudspeakers but said marchers must remain on the sidewalk. Kennedy, the 87-year-old widow of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, led the charge onto the barrier island where protesters held signs to boycott the chain and some acted out a skit.

Tomato harvesters make an average of about $10,000 during the six-month season, earning 50 ¢ for every 32-pound basket they fill. The coalition has used demonstrations and consumer boycotts to pressure the five largest fast food companies — Wendy's, McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, and Taco Bell — into joining its "fair food program." All but Wendy's eventually joined. The coalition says the program can add $20 to $150 to their weekly checks.

Participating companies pay the extra penny-per-pound to their tomato growers to supplement field worker wages in Florida and six other states: Georgia, the Carolinas, Maryland, Virginia and New Jersey.

Peltz, a 73-year-old investor, has a net worth of $1.35 billion and is the 423rd richest American, according to Forbes Magazine.

I'm always amazed how much more moderate and humane foxnews.com - especially foxnewslatino.com - is than the flagship Fox News channel itself.

for financial instruments. He could give a crap about workers. He is in it as just another acquisition to make money off of.

Good thing there are still some older Kennedy's among us. Go Ethel!

Load the company with billions in debt (that's their real profit), hollow it out while it's still worth something, and then pull out when the next recession hits - leaving hundreds of empty storefronts and thousands without work

Who knows. These guys (Peltz's Trian Fund) might be an exception.

Congress will never address this atrocious behavior because they make too much money off of it.

That's what most of our fuzzy wuzzy congresscritters have become.

And that's exactly what Robert Kennedy fought against during his all-too-brief political life.

The Kennedy's have been there fighting for good causes for decades. Oh what a difference John and Bobby could have made.

I remember when Bobby was murdered we felt all hope was gone.

Bobby probably would have gone on to defeat Vice President Humphrey in the primary elections, and then he quite likely would have defeated Nixon in November (1968) and become POTUS.

BTW, Sirhan Sirhan didn't kill Bobby.
Forensic evidence and the testimony of the LA Coroner Thomas Noguchi proved that Bobby was shot just inches from the back of his head, because there were powder burns.
The killer was the Ace Security guard who was behind Bobby as he entered the hotel kitchen.
His name is Thane Eugene Cesar, (who formerly worked for Lockheed in a top secret area).
Cesar's gun was the same caliber as Sirhan's.
Bobby grabbed Cesar's "clip-on" bow tie as he fell to the ground, mortally wounded.

There is much more evidence pointing to Cesar as Bobby's killer on the Internet, in case anyone wants to investigate.

The murder of RFK was covered up by the LAPD and the LA District Attorney.

Coroner Thomas Noguchi, who had stated in his autopsy report that RFK had been shot from 4 to 6 inches from the back of his head, was approached by an assistant D.A. and asked to change his report from "4 to 6 inches" to "4 to 6 feet", but he refused.
(Noguchi wrote about this in his book).
All the eyewitnesses stated that the closest Sirhan got to Bobby was about 6 to 8 FEET away, and Sirhan was shooting from the FRONT of Bobby.

Also, important material evidence, including bullets found in the kitchen door frame, was ripped out and later destroyed by the LAPD.

Thane Eugene Cesar remains a free man to this day.

& the reasons surrounding Ethel's protest. Mom said that if Dave the founder of Wendy's was alive, the one cent would be a moot point. Mom also said, Wendy's is no longer a choice. We grab a sandwich there probably 3-4 times a year, it's right up the street from us & open very late. However we won't be there any time in the future.

Mom rocks too.
