Global temperatures in February smashed previous monthly records by an unprecedented amount, according to Nasa data, sparking warnings of a climate emergency.
The result was a true shocker, and yet another reminder of the incessant long-term rise in global temperature resulting from human-produced greenhouse gases, wrote Jeff Masters and Bob Henson in a blog on the Weather Underground, which analysed the data released on Saturday.
It confirms preliminary analysis from earlier in March, indicating the record-breaking temperatures.
The global surface temperatures across land and ocean in February were 1.35C warmer than the average temperature for the month, from the baseline period of 1951-1980.

And then we have Trump.

(1,115 posts)We are not going to stop it in an instant.
It was only a short time ago when we started playing with fire.
What's a hundred thousand years compared to when this
planet was formed.
I remember last year when we had this relentless cold
winter. We need to live cleaner and keep up our environment
for future generations.
Did we measure climate change in 1776?
Tomorrow I am voting for BERNIE SANDERS !!!

(1,090 posts)of scientist that think the warming is happening a "lot" quicker then the previous models predict. Sorry I can't remember where I read it.

(6,045 posts)LEGALLY binding agreement coming a COP21 in Paris 2015 if it were not for the the Republican controlled US Senate!! Instead we had to settle for a voluntary agreement.
...And now to make things even worse we are looking at the very real possibility that the GOP could control all of Congress & the POTUS could be the this guy...

"The last 15 years, there has been no recorded warming. Contrary to all the theories that they are expounding, there should have been warming over the last 15 years. It hasn't happened."- Ted Cruz

(8,159 posts)I live in the SD Black Hills. I've lived her for over 30 years.
I remember routinely having major snow on the ground from October to at least the end of April.-20 was not unusual and I can remember times of -35.
Last year we had a drop in the amount of snow and if we had any below 0 in my area I don't remember it.
This year I have green grass, it's been in the mid 70s for a week. Earlier in winter we had snow flurries and the most snow I remember on the ground has been 2 inches this winter.
Leaf buds on trees are swelling and I expect they will open a month early.
This is NOT normal.

(23,867 posts)that the solution is...shit, after 15 years of posting about it on this forum, I doubt anyone even knows. It's simple. It's YOU. Not the corporations. They aren't driving your car. They aren't having your children. They aren't building your house. They aren't going on your tourism vacaction.
As long as we blame someone other than ourselves the problem will only change as fast as we can engineer solutions (which are small, temporary).
The answer is personal responsibility. This seems to go over everyone's heads, except for a few. It's the inconvenient part of the inconvenient truth. I hesitated posting this because I will most likely get my automatic rebuttal from someone who thinks I'm wrong. So why post this?

(13,103 posts)I haven't flown since 1989.
I haven't had a vacation since 1989.
I have no choice in what type of transportation that I use.
There are no buses, trains, subways, or cabs where I live.
I live in poverty so I can not purchase an electric vehicle.
I had one child.
He died at the age of 17. That was 26 years ago.
Money restrains what type of housing a person has available.
I would love to have solar and wind power.
Poverty limits my options for those choices and many more.
I have conserved energy since the late 1980's.
I kept my hot water heater turned off except for 1 hour per day.
I did this when I did not live in poverty and I continue to do it now.
I currently live in a very rural area.
I have a cistern. It is my sole water source.
The trees that fall on my property become firewood for my fireplace.
I grow my own tomatoes.
There have been no pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizer used on my
property since I have owned it.
I reuse aluminum foil and plastic bags for food storage.
I have paper grocery bags that are over 5 years old that I take with
me when I grocery shop.
Everything in my home is second hand.
I bought most of the items at yard sales and some were given to me.
Most of the items are over 18 years old.
The options for people who live in poverty are very limited.
I would love to have energy efficient appliances.
I can not afford to replace my refrigerator, electric range, washer, dryer,
or my heating and cooling systems.
I hope my post helps people understand just how limited the choices of
people who live in poverty have.
P.S. My computer is 9 years old. My TV is 18 years old.

(28,120 posts)I admire you and your conscientious endeavors.
And I'm so sorry you lost your son. Having lost a newborn, I can feel but a bit of your pain.
I don't live in poverty but I'm constantly made fun of for my conservation efforts. And I stay angry. I don't think people will awaken but at the last hopeless minute.

(13,103 posts)I am sorry for your loss.
Let them make fun.
You respect the planet and people, as do I.
We are on the right side of this issue.
My family and friends laugh at me as well.
Have a great evening.

(1,527 posts)This is one of the most shocking of any of this. This is what the exponential "hockey stick" global warming would look like. If there was a "pause" it is over now.
A few amateur observations on this global warming trend:
The long term global warming trend since WWII seems to have a stair step type pattern to it. Very large jumps and a new "normal" for a few years until the next large jump.
1998 was one of these large jump during an El-nino year. (which is why all the deniers use it as the first year of their "pause" claims.)
We appear to be in another large jump-up time like 1998. I think a couple of things could happen over then next few months and years. We could see a leveling out or even a slight drop in temp like in 1999, and a new stabilized high step. The new "pause" level.
But even worse is if we have triggered an on going month after month increase. This would truly be the nightmare scenario of the climate "doomers".
Maybe I should buy some extra popcorn while we watch how this plays out.
