The Latest: More Than 2 Million Have Voted in Fla. Already
Source: ABC
More than 2 million Florida voters have already made their choice for president in the state's winner-take-all primary.
The state Division of Elections reported late Monday that almost 1.2 million Republicans had cast ballots, compared with nearly 850,000 Democrats.
Projections are that about 4 million voters will have participated in the Florida primary. Election day is Tuesday, but voters in the Sunshine State have been voting for weeks via absentee and early in-person voting. It is a closed primary.

(7,625 posts)I checked the area for which I have ready access to statistics. 6.7% of registered Democrats 30 and under voters have voted by mail or voted early. 31.2% of registered Democrats 68-80 have done the same- and this being Florida, there are 50+% more voters in the older cohort.
The OP is misleading when it refers to "the state's winner-take-all primary." The Republican primary is winner-take-all, The Democratic primary is not. The low young voter turnout continues the trend of recent years. I have seen a lot of enthusiasm for Bernie locally, but the national campaign early on directed most of that energy into phone banking to the early primary states, not into local efforts. The national campaign also made no real attempt to get younger voters to register as Democrats by February 16, the deadline for party registration in our closed primary state. I think the Sanders campaign made an early strategic decision to focus scarce resources for March 15 primaries on rust belt states.

Or has the Democratic turnout really been this disappointing?
Are these numbers reliable?

(6,568 posts)Obama and a few others weren't even on the ballot. The Florida Dem party decided to change the voting date, and the DNC said no. FL Dem party didn't listen and it was known early on that FL wasn't going to count for the primaries.

(135,425 posts)Elsewhere, too. A lot of those guys are GOP.
Older people tend to vote.
Also, keep this in mind--there are two choices in the Democratic race. While here on DU we like to emphasize stark differences, out there in the real world, there are a LOT of people who will vote for either one, and do it HAPPILY. I KNOW people who say "Either one will do--I'm happy now, I'll worry when it comes to the general."
In the GOP race, they've got Cruz, Home Slice Rubio, Nutcase Sunbird Trump, and Sane (relatively) Kasich. They woulda had JEB! too only he bailed out...in short, they've got a RACE--a real REASON to get out and vote.
With such a varying selection, I'm not surprised that the GOP are turning out in droves.

(36,099 posts)The totals look close. How the Republicans run the election can affect the difference, I suspect.

(4,423 posts)will close the enthusiasm gap and unite the party for the GE.... I think Trump will have an easier time since he is the carnival barker all he needs is a sensible low key VP pick and everyone unites full blown nuts, just nuts, a little nuts and average.... The question is how will Hillary do it, Trump will be reminding us all the way to NOV that we coulda had Bernie....

(7,625 posts)We need to get the millions of younger voters who are getting screwed by current policies involved as volunteers and voters if we are going to turn things around. I don't think most of them believe Hillary will be a significant agent of much-needed change.

(8,361 posts)I'm voting for Bernie. So is my husband. Even if Bernie can''t take Florida, all his supporters need to get out there and vote for him. Let the world know that a lot of us know what a Democrat should be.
