Argentina sinks Chinese trawler fishing illegally
16 March 2016 / 01:24

Baku-APA. Argentina's coastguard has sunk a Chinese fishing trawler that was operating illegally within its territorial waters, the coastguard said on Tuesday, APA reports quoting Reuters.

In a high-seas chase, a coastguard vessel on Monday pursued the fishing vessel Lu Yan Yuan Yu 010 toward international waters, firing warning shots across the Chinese boat's bow as it attempted to raise the crew by radio.

"On several occasions, the offending ship performed maneuvers designed to force a collision with the coastguard, putting at risk not only its own crew but coastguard personnel, who were then ordered to shoot parts of the vessel," the coastguard said in a statement.

Officials at the Chinese Embassy in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, were not available for comment.

Although most of the fisherman onboard may not have been aware they were poaching, and we're just trying to earn money to support their families. I hope none were hurt. The captain and mate surely knew, and they should do time in a nice argentine prison.

As fisheries around the world collapse, poaching and piracy will be the only ways that ship-owners can profit. Makes perfect sense now that it's too late.

Argentina: Navy sinks Chinese boat fishing illegally
By Associated Press March 15 at 11:34 PM

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentina’s navy announced Tuesday that it used gunfire to sink a boat Chinese-flagged boat that was fishing illegally in national waters.

China’s government said it expressed its serious concern to Argentina and called for an investigation

The navy statement said the boat was intercepted Monday off the coast of Puerto Madryn, about 907 miles (1,460 kilometers) south of Buenos Aires.

The statement said the boat did not heed warning calls and instead tried to ram an Argentine naval vessel. Sailors then shot holes in different parts of the fishing boat, causing it to sink, the navy said.

Looks like it is alot more than just the one vessel that was observed with gear in the water.

A handful of fishing boats, and one large boat with a factory for processing: cleaning, filleting, packaging, freezing, and storing the product until it can be shipped to China or other markets.

Argentina is too far away for just one lone little fishing boat.
