Thousands of people are attending the Irish governments official commemoration in Dublin of the 1916 Easter Rising against British rule.
More than 3,500 members of Irelands defence forces paraded past the exact spot where a century ago the rebellion began Dublins General Post Office (GPO).
In one of the first ceremonies, the Irish president, Michael Higgins, lay a wreath at the spot where 15 rebels were executed for their part in the rebellion.
In a poignant ceremony at the Stonebreakers Yard in Dublins Kilmainham gaol, the president was flanked by a military guard of honour drawn from the defence forces cadet school.

(40,656 posts)to Ireland when she was alive. You can still see the bullet holes in the Post Office walls when you go visit it. The museum is amazing. They have the bandages from the martyrs who were executed by the British when it failed on display. The British really fucked up when they did that because the Rising didn't have mass support until then.
I love the Clancys. Seeing them and Tommy Makem in concert was so much fun.
PS THE WOLF TONES! SWOON!

Go some day, redwitch. There is no place in the world like it. If you can, take a ferry to Dun Laoghaire and see it from the sea. We stayed at a place in Dalkey where they had a wedding in the lounge going full blast and a funeral wake in the other. Needless to say, we didn't sleep a wink. Ireland is like no other place on Earth.

(40,656 posts)in town and competed internationally for bagpipes. My cousins and family used to dance and play in bands. SIGH! I love it so. We used to go to what was the moat at Edinburgh Castle in Edinburgh mid day on Tuesdays and Thursdays where they would have a piper and a Scottish Country Dancing team (highland dancers) that would demonstrate the dance, then anyone who wanted could join them. It was awesome. I hope they still do that.
