Ringo Starr cancels N.C. event over LGBT law

Source: Politico

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr is the latest artist to cancel an event in North Carolina.

The musician canceled his scheduled June 18 performance in Cary in response to the state’s controversial bill signed into law late last month that discriminates against LGBT people.

“I’m sorry to disappoint my fans in the area, but we need to take a stand against this hatred,” Starr said in a statement. “Spread peace and love.”

be far more effective than cancelling their events. True a few bucks would be spent in NC but the bully pulpit would be worth the loss

They wouldn't even notice if artists complained about them on stage. Wouldn't make a dent. But this, this is causing a lot of disruption. The governor ran on a pro-economic development platform, and it's an election year for him.

and donating the proceeds to a local LGBT group.

"I think the best way I can do my part is to turn my show into an entire day to build public support to repeal HB2," Lauper told TMZ. The singer recently also spoke about why she decided against canceling her concert, noting that "wherever there's a shutout, wherever there's people who don't accept other people, the other people need you."

What really needs to happen is a boycott of North Carolina goods and service. Cancelling rock shows is going to hurt some promoters, some rooms, some restaurants and the taxi businesses, but boycotting everything NC has to sell will wake them up real quick.
