Officials in Chicago are planning to release a huge volume of evidence Friday from about 100 open investigations into police shootings and use of force, disclosures that come as the citys police department is facing intense scrutiny and promising reforms.
The agency that investigates allegations of police misconduct in the city plans to make public this material which includes videos, audio recordings and reports all at once, the latest reverberation to follow the outcry over video footage of a Chicago police officer fatally shooting Laquan McDonald. That video, released in November, prompted intense protests over both what was on the recording and the fact that it took more than a year and a lawsuit for the city to release it.
The Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA), the Chicago agency that investigates any time someone dies or is seriously injured in police custody and also explores allegations of excessive force, will post the information online as part of a new policy that calls for the city to release it more quickly. Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) has called this an important step in restoring trust between Chicagos police and residents.
