Bodies Of 4 Missing Fort Hood Soldiers Found

FORT HOOD, Texas -- Recovery teams have located the bodies of four Army soldiers who went missing when their truck overturned in a fast-flowing flooded creek during a training exercise at Fort Hood, officials said Friday evening.
Maj. Gen. John Uberti announced that a total of nine soldiers had died, including five whose remains were recovered Thursday. Another three who were rescued shortly after the accident have been released from the hospital, Uberti said.
An Army safety board was on its way to the base to conduct an investigation.
The portion of road on the northern fringe of the post where the Light Medium Tactical Vehicle overturned hadn't been overrun by water during past floods, Fort Hood spokesman Chris Haug said earlier Friday. The vehicle resembles a flatbed truck with a walled bed and is used to carry troops.

(29,414 posts)The turbulence is horrendous, enough that even people trained in such forms of rescue sometimes get swept away, too.

(10,597 posts)... I probably know what that flatbed truck looks like. It ain't NO pickup truck. It's a big heavy MFer, so that should tell you how forceful the stream of water was. If the water was strong enough to float that thing, those boys didn't have a chance.
They need to close that base down. Too many GD things have gone down in the last 10 yrs there. Shuter' down. There are nine families grieving tonight and my heart goes out to all of them. So sad.

(29,414 posts)Yeah, it's sad all the way around. I hate hearing about anyone getting caught in these floods
Water is so powerful in flash-floods, you just can't look at it as that soft stuff you swim in. The people for whom I hope this is a lesson are the commanders and trainers. Maybe they should set up a flash-flood simulator to show how water can take out even the heaviest and most massive of vehicles.
... that's right. Don't let it's looks kid you. That is a heavy SOB. Every vehicle the military has is heavy, humvees especially. My hubby was driving one of those one time, and was broadsided by another humvee and I thought my husband was going to die. I don't know how many ribs were broken, but I thought he would never recuperate.
Nope, I think this is it for Fort Hood. They need to shut it down. Too much bad shite has gone down there. I just can't get over it... 9 soldiers, gone in a flood at Fort Hood.

(36,063 posts)What needs to be shut down is training activities that amount to asking soldiers to participate in 'stupid shit' that gets people killed or injured.
If making an at-grade road crossing during a time of flash flood warnings wasn't known to be something stupid it certainly should be now.
The military, especially under-experienced officers, has something of a tradition of asking it's troops to expose themselves to things which in retrospect are surprisingly and unnecessarily stupid. So much so that it's a common theme of songs and movies.
