David v. Goliath: Special-interest funding in Assembly race
Source: Yolo county news
With two days to go before the election, special-interest money continues flowing into the local Assembly race, which ranks second in the state behind only the local state Senate race in the amount of independent expenditures spent so far: more than $2.7 million.
While much of the money represents a battle between opposing special interests charter-school proponents versus public school teachers; the oil industry versus the League of Conservation Voters its a battle of David versus Goliath.
Charter-school proponent EdVoice and Chevron Corp. and other oil companies are spending far more money than their opponents statewide, and therein lies the difference in the race for the 4th Assembly District.
Special-interest money aimed at getting Winters Mayor Cecilia Aguiar-Curry elected to the Assembly totaled $2.5 million Friday, including $2.2 million spent on mailers, TV and radio ads, social media promotions and phone calls encouraging voters to support the Winters mayor.
Another $335,000 has been spent on attack ads targeting one of Aguiar-Currys opponents, Davis Mayor Dan Wolk. EdVoice has spent $152,000 attacking Wolk and the PAC dubbed Keeping Californians Working whose largest contributor is Chevron has spent $183,000 opposing Wolk.
