White House threatens to veto the Senates policy defense bill

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House says President Barack Obama will veto the Senate version of the annual defense policy bill if the legislation reaches his desk.

A statement released Tuesday by the Office of Management and Budget says the administration strongly objects to numerous provisions in the bill, including those that bar the closing of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and limit the size of the National Security Council staff. The bill also blocks a new round of military base closings.

The White House says the bill attempts to micromanage the Defense Department.

The Armed Services Committee passed the defense policy bill last month. The full Senate is considering the bill, which authorizes $602 billion in military spending for the fiscal year than begins Oct. 1.
