Police: Rancher lassos bike thief outside Oregon Wal-Mart

Updated 12:07 pm, Saturday, June 11, 2016

EAGLE POINT, Ore. (AP) — A rancher jumped on his horse Friday morning and lassoed a man who was trying to steal a bicycle in the parking lot of an Oregon Wal-Mart, police said.

Robert Borba was at the Eagle Point store loading dog food and a camping tent into his truck when he heard a woman screaming that someone was trying to steal her bike, the Medford Mail Tribune reports (http://goo.gl/L5PTLm).

The 28-year-old said he quickly got his horse, Long John, out of its trailer. He grabbed a rope, rode over to the man who was reportedly struggling with the bike gears and attempting to flee on foot. Borba lassoed the man around the legs and when he dropped, Borba dragged him to one end of the parking lot.

"I seen this fella trying to get up to speed on a bicycle," Borba told the Tribune. "I wasn't going to catch him on foot. I just don't run very fast."

Much, much better outcome than the Rambo wannabe's who start shooting at the slightest provocation.

Once again demonstrating that a manual transmission is a theft deterrent.

Had this been pitched as the plot of an episode of "Walker, Texas Ranger," it would have been rejected as outlandishly improbable.

the slowest bike thief in history because the guy had enough time to get his horse out of the trailer and put the saddle on, etc. (which takes a little while to do properly).

He saddled the horse first, then took off at a gallop and caught up to the guy. The rope is already attached to the saddle if you use your horse to work cattle.

Now I'm picturing him jumping on his horse and then swirling the rope above his head and he rides toward the thief, then once he's close he throws the "loopy end" of the rope over the guy to yank him off the bike.

I have obviously never left the city...

Yes, you circle the rope around your head as part of preparing to throw it. Find a calf roping video.

You should take up rodeo.

I hope he didn't injure the thief though, because I would hate to see him get sued over this.
