Donald Trump Faces Backlash for Tweets About Orlando Shooting
Source: TIME
"Appreciate the congrats," Trump tweeted
Donald Trump faced a backlash on Twitter after tweeting his response to the deadly Orlando shooting Sunday morning, when he acknowledged congrats for being right on terrorism.
Like much of what Trump does, it inspired a wave of responses. It angered Republicans and Democrats as well as some celebrities who criticized with a familiar line: that Trump is self-centered even in moments of tragedy the shooting killed at least 50 people and is the deadliest mass shooting in American history. The motives of suspected shooter Omar Mateen were not immediately clear.
John Legend, the singer and songwriter, Chris Sacca, the venture capitalist and George Takei, best known for his role on Star Trek, called Trump out on Twitter.

(24 posts)from the moment I woke up and learned about this tragedy. We need to do something about guns. Screw the 2nd amendment. It was written in a time before assault rifles and automatic weapons. A time when it took ten minutes to load a gun with one bullet!

Trump also tweeted: "Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don't want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!".
And just before the President spoke, Trump tweeted: "Is President Obama going to finally mention the words radical Islamic terrorism? If he doesn't he should immediately resign in disgrace!"
"Reporting that Orlando killer shouted "Allah hu Akbar!" as he slaughtered clubgoers. 2nd man arrested in LA with rifles near Gay parade," he added

(3,072 posts)I have heard this a lot before yesterday. People, mainly on the left, say "Trump will lose, unless there is a major economic downturn or terrorist attack". Where is this line of thinking coming from? Where is the proof that anyone, outside his "poorly educated" base, see trump as a military or foreign policy expert? I have never seen evidence that people would flock to him under either of those circumstances.

(11,085 posts)If he came up with the idea himself or heard it somewhere else, I don't know. I think he's worried about a post-9/11 effect. If people get so scared that critical thinking disappears, then Trump has a chance. You know, like how George W. Bush's approval ratings went above 90% even though he did just about everything wrong after 9/11. To work for Trump it would have to be a horrendous enough attack that it makes everyone stupid.
Doctor Jack
(3,072 posts)People ran into Bush and Co's evil embrace after 9/11 but that was 15 years ago. At that time, terrorist attacks in the U.S. was a very rare thing. We have had a decade and a half since of warnings, wars, actual attacks. I think people are much more savvy and calm at dealing with these things now than they were back in 2001. And a great number of people seem to understand that the guy that instantly starts calling for massive changes to our foreign and military policy, to our cultural practices, and to our rights is not the guy to be trusted in crisis. You see a lot of polls showing that people in this country are extremely hesitant to get involved in more conflicts in the middle east, to send in troops against ISIS, and to support expansion of government surveillance. And this has stayed consistent, even after events like San Bernardino and the Boston bombings.

(150 posts)Omar Mateen legally purchased a handgun and a long gun within the last few days, ATF Assistant Special Agent in Charge Trevor Velinor told reporters on Sunday.
"He is not a prohibited person," Velinor said.
The FBI interviewed Mateen in 2013 and 2014, FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Ronald Hopper said.
"Those interviews turned out to be inconclusive, so there was nothing to keep the investigation going," Hopper said.
Mateen was not under investigation at the time of Sunday's shooting and was not under surveillance.

(59,503 posts)In moments like this, the country rallies around the President. It even happened when the hostages were taken by Iran under Jimmy Carter.
IN 2012, the far more reputable Mitt Romney really really hurt himself by going out the night of the Benghazi deaths with his attacks on Obama. Little remembered is that he is the FIRST one who spoke of the video. He attacked the US embassy in Cairo, Egypt for putting out a statement explaining that they disagreed with the video, explaining that freedom of speech allows things like that, but the government disagreed with the content.
It was also why it took about three years (when Katrina happened) that people finally abandoned GWB. For two many people, he was the leader that they needed to believe in for their own sake.
Taking cheap potshots at the President, when he made a typically eloquent, appropriate response has to backfire. In the first place, he is dumb to want to place himself in comparison to the well regarded President, who is not up for reelection.
