Marine Corps: 15 drill instructors under investigation

Susanne M. Schafer, Associated Press

Updated 4:36 pm, Thursday, June 30, 2016

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The Marine Corps is looking into allegations of hazing, assault and physical abuse involving 15 drill instructors at Parris Island training depot in South Carolina, officials said Thursday.

The allegations stem from an investigation into the death of a Parris Island recruit in March, Maj. Gen. James W. Lukeman, the commander of Marine Corps training and education at Quantico, Virginia, said in a statement.

Raheel Siddiqui of Taylor, Michigan, 20, died after falling nearly 40 feet in a stairwell at the installation, the Naval Criminal Investigation Service has said.

Once the Marine Corps' investigations are complete, it will be up to Lukeman to determine "appropriate administration and judicial actions necessary" based on the study's findings, the statement said.

Did you miss part where someone died?

The training is supposed to be tough yes, but when someone is killed during it, questions should be answered. Maybe it was an accident, maybe something more. They are still investigating. The DIs do have a tough job and training isn't supposed to be easy. That doesn't mean some instructors don't cross a line that gets someone killed

If a kid died because a DI did something TO him, personally and outside the realm of ordinary military instruction, then he needs to go.

But what makes Marines hard, what takes an undisciplined lout and turns him into an honorable (boot) warrior, is the entire DI, not some restrained version of one. We can't have the PC police running rampant through our drill instructors. No way.

Fear is a great motivator. You experience true fear, often for the first time, at either of our fine recruit training depots. I know I did that hot summer in South Carolina 32 years ago. It came in the form of four VERY intimidating professionals whom I was never quiiiiiiiite sure wouldn't actually hurt me. And except for one thrown ammo box, I never was. But I don't want that tool - fear - taken away from those who still break down civilians and make Marines as we are supposed to be: lean, mean fighting machines.

Maybe in the future we will no longer need Marines. Speed the day. Until then...

Semper Fi.

How many of your fellow trainees couldn't hang on, and ended up dead?

More than 30 years later I still vividly remember my DI's names, rank & viciousness. Truly are men of respect.

Semper Fi indeed.

"The safety of the recruits and the integrity of the Marine Corps recruit training program are among our top priorities."

Among their top priorities?
