Jimmy, Rosalynn Carter Reach 70th Wedding Anniversary
Source: ABC News
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are marking their 70th wedding anniversary.
The former U.S. president and first lady married on July 7, 1946, in their small hometown of Plains, Georgia. Jimmy Carter, who's 91, and Rosalynn Carter, 88, told The Associated Press last month that mutual respect makes their long marriage possible.
The Carters also said they give each other plenty of space while working on separate projects.
The couple plans to spend the day at home in Plains, while the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta will mark the occasion with 70-cent admission. Museum officials say they'll deliver cards to the Carters.

(250,127 posts)I've been listening to Jimmy Carter's autobiography "A Full Life" on audio disc - read by the author himself - and he really has led a full - and pretty amazing life. I think it wasn't until disc #5 that he ran for president, LOL. And Rosalynn, as well as their kids, have been with him all the way. She was initially rather shy, but during his Navy career she was on her own a lot and gained confidence - and it turns out that she was good at - and really enjoyed - managing his initial campaigns. They also grew up very near each other, she was a friend of his sister's. When there was a new baby in the neighborhood, the Carters went to call on the family, and little Jimmy was one of the first to peek into her crib when Rosalynn was a baby...

(45,251 posts)Whether it's fiction or real life--but especially real life--I love The Notebook type story of love at first sight lasting "until death do us part."
(Just realized, that should be "until death does us part." Talk about grammar Nazis!)

(7,490 posts)She mispronounced Rosalynn Carter's name. I thought of it as a lack of respect. She was the First Lady, every adult in the country should be able to pronounce her name. (She said Rozlyn)
I have an unusual double name and people have gotten it wrong my whole adult life, maybe I am sensitive or maybe Mika is just a jerk.

(21,317 posts)Good for them. I was a teenager when Carter was president. He always struck me as one of the most fundamentally decent public figures of my lifetime.

Congrats to a great couple. One of the few I can say really lives their religious faith the way it was presented in the New Testament.
