Oscar Pistorius: Appeal over 'shockingly lenient' sentence
Source: BBC
South African prosecutors say they will appeal against Oscar Pistorius's six-year sentence for murder, calling it "shockingly too lenient".
The National Prosecuting Authority said the sentence was "disproportionate to the crime" and could bring the justice system "into disrepute".
The Olympic athlete was jailed earlier this month for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.
He admits killing her but says he mistook her for an intruder.
The 29-year-old was initially given a five-year term for manslaughter, but was found guilty of murder on appeal last December.

(3,194 posts)They sure do have a special judicial process down there in South Africa. I suppose it enables the privileged folk(aka white folk), to skate through the system, as a reward for their status in S.A.
It makes perfect sense that the judge, who originally was going to give "remorseful" Oscar, a verbal retribution for his murderous actions, gets her decision completely reversed and overturned by a higher court.
So clearly, it should fall on her to decide his punishment, after she did such a bang up job on that the 1st time.
Is it really a surprise? Did anybody think she was going to stop swooning over Oscar and his tears of sorrow, and give him a sentence which is justified based on his conviction? The fact his legal team had ZERO desire to appeal the ruling, says it all.
I suppose it's just coincidence that the judge was planning on retiring following this case. This sort of thing is common practice down there, judges getting bribed, and the legless wonder's family has plenty of $$$$ to get the sentence they are comfortable with.
