Defiant Ted Cruz stands by refusal to endorse Trump after being booed during convention speech

By Theodore Schleifer and Stephen Collinson, CNN

Updated 10:09 AM ET, Thu July 21, 2016

Cleveland (CNN) — Ted Cruz on Thursday strongly defended his refusal to endorse Donald Trump during his Republican National Convention speech, saying he's not "in the habit" of backing politicians who attack his family. ... "I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father," Cruz said at a morning meeting where he faced sharp questions from the Texas delegation in Cleveland.

The Texas senator sensationally withheld an endorsement of Trump in his speech Wednesday, earning a chorus of boos from the floor while getting upstaged in a power play by the GOP nominee himself. ... In a dramatic development, as Cruz wrapped up his speech, Trump suddenly appeared in the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. He walked to join his family in a VIP area and flashed a thumbs-up -- a gesture that transmitted clear anger at the Texas senator's behavior.
....

As delegates began to protest, Sen. Cruz's wife, Heidi Cruz, was heckled by Trump supporters shouting "Goldman Sachs!" and escorted out by security. Heidi Cruz, who is an employee of Goldman Sachs, declined to answer questions from reporters, saying, "I don't talk to the media, thanks." ... The stunning political theater between the top two contenders in the Republican primary race blew open divisions in the party that the convention is designed to heal, and suggested Cruz believes Trump will lose in November.
....

Blocked from Adelson suite

Cruz's rebuke ignited a hot scene around the senator as soon as he left the stage. People averted their eyes from Cruz and his wife as they walked with their security detail on the skybox level of boisterous Republicans. ... On the donor suite level, people approached Cruz and insulted him, a source told CNN's Dana Bash. One state party chairman reacted so angrily that he had to be restrained. ... Cruz, who has long sought the support of GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson, was turned away when he tried to enter Adelson's suite.

Trump accuses Cruz's father of helping JFK's assassin

By Nolan D. McCaskill | 05/03/16 07:36 AM EDT

Donald Trump on Tuesday alleged that Ted Cruz’s father was with John F. Kennedy’s assassin shortly before he murdered the president, parroting a National Enquirer story claiming that Rafael Cruz was pictured with Lee Harvey Oswald handing out pro-Fidel Castro pamphlets in New Orleans in 1963.

What goes around, comes around.

Or, in Klingon, revenge is a dish best served cold.

I still wish Cruz won the GOP primary. Yeah he's fucking awful but Trump is dangerous. After what Trump said about NATO I'm starting to think Putin has some sort of influence over him. Completely terrifying.

the thing that led Jimmy Carter to say that he's scarier than Trump, namely his dogmatic, unwavering convictions (that happen to be reactionary and backward) are the same thing that led Cruz to take this stand against Trump in prime time onstage at the GOP convention.

The first vid on the CNN roll shows this perfectly, and yes I agree with you, if not for the rest of Cruz's entire being and political career and stance, this would indeed look like an admirable act

He told an arena full of amoral, un-empathetic fake Christians to, "vote your conscience." To them, and the viewers who support all this nonsense, a vote for Trump is a vote for their consciences.

Asking them to do the right thing is like asking a raccoon to stop raiding the trash cans. They will do that when the path of maximum benefit and least resistance drives them back to the forest. That's their morality.

As I had posted in another thread...

I don't quite get the furor at the convention over Cruz's telling the voters to follow their conscience. Wouldn't it have been worse if he'd told them NOT to follow their conscience? "Ignore your heart, ignore your conscience, ignore your sense of decency, and support Trump!" Yes, that would have gone over real well.

Plus, if you're a reactionary mouth-breather who supports Trump, wouldn't you assume that any "sane" (meaning, believing as you do) person would, in following their conscience, also support Trump? So, why get upset over someone telling people to follow their conscience?

I think my problem is that I'm being entirely too logical about this.

I've got a book in my cubicle that the technical library downstairs threw out several years ago:

Dictionary of Foreign Phrases and Classical Quotations in Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, Italian, German and Portuguese; Edited by H. P. Jones, Edinburgh, John Grant, 1929.

There's probably something in there in Latin that comes close.

This gets the job done:

From Moby Dick, Captain Ahab:

From hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee. Ye damned whale.

And the classic:

Best wishes.

Trump is a repulsive oaf who is unfit to lead anything, much less the leader of the world's most powerful country. I still find it astounding that he is so popular in this country. Hopefully this disastrous convention will destroy his chances of winning this election.

and there was discussion that the "boogate" was a setup. Drumpf new what Cruz was going to say and no endorsement. So at the right moment they had a guy in the NY delegates section to wind them up and then Drumpf made his appearance in the VIP section. Afterward a Drumpf tweet. It was to help unify his base. So I think it was another theatric by drumpf.

Trump revives rumor linking Cruz's father to JFK assassination

By Dan Spinelli

07/22/16 11:25 AM EDT

A day after accepting the Republican Party’s nomination for president, Donald Trump rehashed a conspiracy theory that claims the man who killed President John F. Kennedy once cavorted with Ted Cruz’s father.

“I don't know his father. I met him once. I think he's a lovely guy,” Trump said at a morning-after rally in Cleveland. “All I did is point out the fact that on the cover of the National Enquirer there was a picture of him and crazy Lee Harvey Oswald having breakfast.”

Trump invoked Cruz’s father during an extended screed against the Texas senator for failing to endorse him during the convention. While Trump and Cruz were primary rivals in May, Trump initially pointed out an Enquirer story which featured Cruz’s father, Rafael Cruz, pictured with Lee Harvey Oswald while handing out pro-Fidel Castro pamphlets in New Orleans in 1963.

More known for its sordid tales of celebrity affairs and alien invasion cover-ups, the National Enquirer has famously broken two major stories: John Edwards’ love child during the 2008 presidential campaign and some early aspects of O.J. Simpson’s 1994 murder trial, exceptions Trump gleefully pointed out on Friday.

But I don't blame him for not endorsing Trump. Personal attacks are one thing. Personal attacks against family members are uncalled for. Plus, his rumor about Cruz's father being involved in JFK's assassination are ridiculous.
