2nd former Ole Miss student sentenced in statue vandalism
Updated 3:58 pm, Thursday, July 21, 2016
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) A former University of Mississippi student has been sentenced to a year's probation plus 50 hours community service for placing a noose on the statue of the school's first black student.
Multiple news outlets report 21-year-old Austin Reed Edenfield, of Kennesaw, Georgia, was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Mike Mills, who also ordered Edenfield to get substance abuse and mental health treatment.
Edenfield pleaded guilty in March to one count of using a threat of force to intimidate African-American students and employees by putting a noose on the James Meredith statue.
Another former student, Graeme Phillip Harris, of Alpharetta, Georgia, pleaded guilty to the same charge in June 2015 and was sentenced to six months in prison.

(290 posts)In a lot of ways, I liked the school. I liked the grounds in particular, and off and on over the years I've reminisced fondly about my few months there before I transferred to University of Arizona.
That being said, the school absolutely has an ugly legacy, and these two whizkids are exemplars of that. Another ugly legacy at the school is the power and prevalence of the Greek system. When I was there in the late 90s, if you weren't Greek, you weren't shit. The relatively small size of the student body had a peculiar magnifying effect on the stature of the frats and sororities.
All things considered, I'm glad I transferred out, even though I walked away from a full ride scholarship in doing so.
