Air strikes thought to be Russian hit displaced camps in Syria - monitor

Source: Reuters

Air strikes believed carried out by Russian warplanes hit two displaced persons' camps west of Aleppo and near the Turkish border on Thursday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group reported.

It said the strikes killed at least two children and wounded 30 people near the town of Atareb, which is in rebel-held territory. A number of tents were damaged or burned in the strikes, it added.

Russia has waged an air campaign against insurgents in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since September.

The British-based Observatory, which tracks the violence using a network of contacts on the ground, said the jets were believed to be Russian because of their colour and the fact there were several planes flying in formation.

Russia's foreign ministry sharply criticized U.S. behavior in Syria on Thursday, accusing Washington of backing rebels who use poison gas against civilians and of killing hundreds in air strikes.

Zakharova spoke out as the United Nations said the United States and Russia were in intensive discussions to shore up Syria's collapsed nationwide truce with their military experts trying to agree a cooperation plan "that would unlock the entire solution."

Zakharova criticized the United States over an incident the Russian military said occurred on Aug. 2 in eastern Aleppo when rebels used poison gas, killing at least seven people.

She blamed the Free Syrian Army's Nour al Din al-Zinki group for what she said was a crime. The same group, which has received U.S. military backing, said last month it was investigating the beheading of a young child in Aleppo after video footage circulated showing the boy being killed by a man whom activists identified as a member of the group.

"The United States is supporting these animals who used poison gas against the civilian population," Zakharova wrote.

The only solution to the Syrian Civil War is a negotiated peace. Until that happens, innocent civilians will continue to suffer and die.
